Irish Martial Arts Commission to IOC: MMA “not a sport” and “belongs underground” with dogfighting

Yeah, it takes a ton of skill to take a shit on my lawn. Please stop responding to my posts.

haha not a sport because you're not making any money out of it.. hypocrites

Freedom of Information requests have revealed that, after being asked to take MMA under its wing, the Irish Martial Arts Commission dismissed it as “pornographic, sadistic and voyeuristic to its core”.

It wrote to the International Olympic Committee saying that MMA “is NOT a sport” and should not be legitimised as one through formal recognition.

The Commission even urged a ban, comparing MMA to dogfighting and saying that “there are some things that belong underground”.

“We have to be strong enough to say No – to draw a line – and live with the criticism ... If MMA is not interested in changing the rules regarding elements such as ‘ground and pound’ then a ban is the only option”.

Further regulation was not considered worth encouraging on the basis that, fundamentally, “what consumers of MMA want to see [is] people not just beaten but people physically damaged”.

sadly its true... mma fans actually are more into seeing someone hurt ( for example KOed brutally), then actual high level competition of athlets... bleed god fans hop in ;)

MMA is a sport. Just because you're slow doesn't mean it's not.

And yes, MMA fans regularly hate on MMA and make it seem like it's a circus. Weird kids.
It is a circus, just a little but better than pro wrestling int hat regard.

Isn't that the same with hockey fans?

Elements of if are a circus but the same is true of other sports.

What do all the Pitbulls and Mad Dogs have to say about this?

By saying it's pornographic are they assuming viewers actually "get off" while watching it. I mean there is a certain satisfaction in watching but I have never "gotten off" because I saw some dude get knocked out or tapped out.

The fuck, how can they call themselves a commission on martial arts if they're against fighting?

What are they actually a commission of, dance routines masquerading as fighting? So basically ballet?

You sir have not lived. I get off every time there's a brutal beat down.

Ireland's exposure to MMA has been through a superficial, heavily tattooed, potty-mouthed thug notorious for his disrespectful nature - the complete antithesis of martial arts, really. It's hardly surprising that these people would have a low opinion of the sport.

I'm a Conor fan but this is yet another example of why he's been so terrible for the sport. He could've represented the sport with dignity and class but chose the selfish route and made it look like a joke. Shame on him.
Conor has done himself and his family good with his anticts, if he were another everyday average kind of fighter he would still be stuck on the prelims of a Fox show fighting the Cole Miller's of the world. I doubt the majority of Ireland would even know own he existed. So in away he could represent the sport better by being a nice guy who sent his opponents post cards and hugged them every five seconds during a fight, but at least what he does now gets the sport exposure. And most people can see through the character McGregor portrays for the real human being underneath it all.
