Opinion Internet is a utility. Govt should provide free internet for all homes

Government should:

- feed my kids breakfast lunch and dinner
-give me healthcare
-put a roof over my head
-pay for my internet and phone
You have a fundamental human right to other people's labor. Don't you forget that

Lmfao now the government gives out free utilities? They gonna pay my power bill and all other utilities? Or is it only for low life scum that refuses to work?

If you can't even keep net neutrality, guaranteed internet is a pipe dream.

At least in the lower connection speeds and caps at minimum.
Government should subsidize and provide basic wifi at no cost, especially to low income housing

If schools are a necessity, lockdowns are a necessity, then so is internet in order to learn.

You simply cannot have 2-3 major ISP running the internet business for the entire country and jacking up the prices the way they see fit

Goatmo taking the first step in creating internet equity but its still not enough.

yeah because the government pays for all other utilities like power and gas and telephone......

another stupid thread by you

net neutrality was garbage and it was removed and the internet was just fine....

Also, net neutrality only ever benefited the huge companies that rode on broadband.

I....

Actually agree.

Remember when we had books, paper, and pencils? I bet we learned a lot more back then than the kids today

The internet allows someone to learn whatever they want for dirt cheap. You have access to the near totality of human knowledge at your fingertips. Just because most people use the internet in a retarded manner doesn't mean that the technology isn't highly valuable.

You can learn athletic programming, prehab, nutrition, writing skills, editing, story plotting, drawing, online sales, etc. all from home. And then do online dating during your break lol. It's like having millions of books at your disposal.

That said, I use notebooks and pencils quite a lot still.

This day and age, Internet is almost as essential as other commodities. The ISPs should have some affordable Internet plans so everyone can be connected.

I'll take 1tbps up and down plz, k thx

Yeah, Soros places the call to Nancy and then Nancy places the call to Jack and then, boom, you're thrown off Twitter. The chain of command is obvious, bro.
You really got a thing for the orange man, even though im not even american and i didn't mention the guy. Anyway i would liie to be as naive to think the government doesn't control or see what people are doing in the world web. I guess snowden was just a terrorist

Now you're moving the goalposts. The point was that the government doesn't tell Jack Dorsey how to run his business. If you have an issue with "cancel culture" you must lay the blame at the feet of those actually responsible: the plutocrat class.

Oh good. "Low income" families. So once again, people who do nothing will be handed for free what I have to work for.
Giving a family free or heavily subsidized internet is not a big cost, much less soo that subsidizing farmers. I have a small business and yet I am getting handouts like farmers, but I am not opposed to small family farms getting subsidies.

Its to level out with low income families. Free basic Government subsidized wifi should be available to all families, rich and poor

We don’t even provide free electricity or water. Let’s start with the actual basics.

Should lower income people go without running water, a roof over their head, access to food?

If the markets are unable to provide the basic necessities, it is the the role of the government to provide basic needs in the name of public security.

The question is whether internet can be considered a basic necessity. I think people can survive without instagram and youtube, but a case can be made that email and the news are things that can be considered basic necessities.

I'm not advocating that the entirety of the internet should be available for free, but I'm just saying there is enough there to warrant a discussion in the very least instead of being overtly dismissive.
Here you can use the internet for free at the unemployment office to send/recieve emails and apply for jobbs. Ofc social media and porn and shit is blocked so you dont spend your time doing stupid shit and taking up time on the computers wich other might need.

Its a perfect compromise as it makes you go to the unemployment office, a place you probably should be if you cant afford the internet.

Also last year when i was in oslo i noticed they had a public wifi net there you could request password for on your phone. Dunno if it covers all of oslo but it was horribly slow wich is also a nice incentive to only use it for important stuff and not goofing around on

Yeah internet should be free because it is a utility just like electricity, gas, and water. GTFO.

Well, the UN thinks that Internet Access is a human right at this moment in time, and the USA is a charter member, so... I guess so.

But does that mean broadband for every citizen? Dunno.
In the present environment with so many distance learning, it really does become a necessity of life for families all across the country, so now more then ever, I think the UN is right.

Generally speaking, however, vast segments of humanity operate just fine in complete ignorance, so apart from Covid times I'd have a harder time agreeing.
Is access to puss a human right?
