Internet aggression

I had someone call me a dumbass because I explained my logic. Then afterwards he had the nerve to tell me I was being illogical and only his theory was correct even though he lost the game.

All this for vcash gambling.

People are TUF on the interwebs because of anonymity and they dont need to have quick wits like they would in real life when it comes to shit talking.

I have debates with people but nobody ever gets fucking crazy like these forums. But you would be less prone to criticize someone if everyone knew the way you look and who you are. Facebook is more like real life interaction with people.

I don't mind good heated debates in here - in fact sometimes I'm primed for a good fight. The catch is that it has to be something I believe strongly about and/or am passionate about. And then, I still don't take it too far. There's got to be give and take - which doesn't necessarily mean you give up your stance. Anyway, people who hold grudges and get too high and mighty need to chill and get their perspective back. I need to do that now and again too.

All internet is nowadays:

1. Fuck you *********!

2. Porn

3. Cats

4. Trolls

In future these will melt into one super category, and I ain't here to witness it.

It's kind of sad, because way back I used to frequent the OT a lot. The feel at the time was different then what it turned into. Sure there was flaming and calling out, but there was a constant sense of goofiness and no one (or few) seemed to take themselves seriously. It was hilarious but somewhat mature at the same time if that makes sense. Then one or two new members got on there who really didnt inderstand the dynamic at the time . . . The poster or two built up a post-count rather quickly and garnered quite a following and soon the whole tone of the place turned into "hardcore". Nothing was funny, ironic, subtle, ingenious anymore . . . The fun of the place turned into a junior high/senior high dumb person hangout. Hard to describe, but Ive hardly even lurked in there as a result. Said member is still in there doing what said member does. And it's not like I had a huge blowout or anything, I stood up to the poster and some of the tone but after a few weeks or a month or two I just couldn't be bothered with that forum. The wit and good-willed flaming behind the understood facade of words had been lost to the hardcore attitude that took over - not funny most of the time, and genuinely dim/dull.

gotten to imo

Its the guy who takes every opinion contrary to his to the bone that gets me, then treats it as a last man standing comp.

No debate, no discussion just spouts aggressive abuse that hijacks every thread & reduces it down to a 'just bleed' i can piss higher than you spittlefest.

The post before yours nails it. Particularly the first point. The OT used to have some genuinely unique, bizarre and hysterical threads where the conversation would get side-splitting. This was for most of 2007 and prior. The it took a turn to where for awhile ALL it was "fuck you" and the most basic humour with cliched "tits or GTFO" or "pics" or the like over and over and over again. Really. It just got dumb. And, honestly, it was really one poster who started it (and believe me, not even directed at me lol), and a bunch of noobs who didnt know the prior tone ran with it. The place in a matter of weeks went from entertaining to meh. Just all the same rehashed stuff that was "hardcore," unoriginal and definately not funny. It went from first few seasons of
Family Guy to present-day rehashed Family Guy (though less funny).

I know exactly what you're saying, believe me . . . It's not really what you're thinking. I spent enough time there to know the ebbs and flows of the forum. I also heard of different waves that forum went through prior to my time. I even went back in a few times afterward but it never was the same.

There was a bunch of awesome posters who quietly slipped out of the OT without having anything generate into an efight or callout. Guys who could talk smack but didnt take themselves too seriously. Then there was a big banning that went on that eliminated a bunch of the other regulars at the time. So things just changed . . . And that place is too much about your cred there. I went back for a few weeks in 2008 and maybe a time or two later and I'd see other older posters try another kick at the can in there and then just leave never to return. Again there was a new breed that came in and just sort of reeked havoc and the whole feel left. IMHO.

Just did a bit of lurking in there . . . Actually might give it another shot. Doesn't seem so bad. A broad range of posters helps (saw some good ones).

I started on the internet way, way the fuck back.
Learned in the 1990's its absolutely, no place worth taking seriously- and that was when it was 1/100th what it is today in terms of breadth, participation and overall 'shit to deal with'.

Discussions and debates are fun, to see who can formulate their position better and make the other guy look like a goof but unquestionably, it does create an odd playground for certain bizarre personality traits that don't manifest very often in real life.

In the most literal way possible, internet discussions do not matter. Internet people do not matter. None of you matter to me, I certainly shouldn't matter to you. On this basis, how could 'internet aggression' possibly be a concern? Because someone someplace typed words on a screen, I read them and as a result, had an emotional reaction? Because of words on a screen?

If you find yourself at this point, it's definitely time to turn off the computer, step back from the internet and go engage in real life a bit more.
