I had quite the interesting night last night. Yesterday I was meeting up with a couple friends to have dinner and get a beer or two afterwards. On the way there I got this girl’s number who also happened to be in the area to meet with two of her friends, which prompted me to convince her to bring her friends to join us for drinks later. With three guys, three chicks, and drinking, I figure some of us would end up hooking up.
Fast forward to later in the evening, my friends and I stumble onto a bar that had a sign saying there was a beer pong tournament taking place in an hour. We sign up, get second place, and win a bottle of whiskey, which we share with the aforementioned girls. Since one team could only have two players, my other friend Kevin, was content to watch and play hypeman as he got progressively drunk from the various cocktails he was ordering. Since I drove, I didn’t drink the whiskey and gave my share to Kevin, who was more drunk than I realized at the time. He was stumbling all over the place but otherwise seemed to be in good spirits to we decided to move to another lounge type bar where you can dance. The girls said it’s late and collectively decided to go home after drinking our booze, which was typical lol.
We move to the next bar, which we have frequented quite often in the past, although we haven’t as much in recent days. Nevertheless, the bouncer recognizes me and waves me in, and is about to wave my other friend in when sees that Kevin is visibly more drunk than us and tells us he can’t enter. The other friend, Nigel, couldn’t believe it. This is a bar that can be perhaps described as a bit trashy, for a lack of a better word, where we witnessed frequent fights with the staff sometimes doing nothing or even letting belligerent customers back in after they’re done fighting on the street outside. Nigel tried to argue with the bouncer, referring to all the times we’ve been here and spent money. He was pretty pissed and a bit drunk himself. I myself was disappointed that the guy wouldn’t let our friend in despite that fact he’s seen us multiple times and we have never ever caused trouble, but I also thought it’s pretty pointless to argue with the employee of a private business about who they let in. I didn’t like the commotion Nigel’s arguing was causing; some of the other employees started to trickle out, perhaps to see what was going on, perhaps to back the bouncer up.
Nigel was pissed, but Kevin took this all very personally. Kevin is a nice guy, perhaps a bit too passive, and he would be the last person to start a fight or cause trouble. He couldn’t believe someone would take him for being dangerous and this upset him quite a bit. In a positive turn of events, the girls from before came back because they missed the last subway home and taxis are expensive. The six of us went to a different bar which I expect to be a great opportunity to game the girls, but Kevin uses the opportunity to start bawling his eyes out and spill his sob story about how he was ill-treated as a kid. In between bouts of crying, Kevin repeatedly tries to bolt out of the bar to go back to the bouncer to confront him, talking about how he needs to convince the dude that he isn’t a dangerous person. Nigel and I spend the rest of the night trying to calm him down and wrestle him away from the door. I was afraid Kevin would go back and get pummeled, and even if he didn’t go back to the bouncer, he might get lost or robbed or something in his state. Once time I had to literally wrestle him down so he couldn’t move. My grappling experience and strength training turned out handy.
The girls then took turn consoling him and hugging him. They were incredibly nice and understanding. So that was pretty much the night. I couldn’t close with the girl I was interested in because we were all too busy consoling Kevin. She was into me but after a while I was just too tired and I just wanted to see my friend get home safe. As soon as I sobered up I drove him home.
This reminded me of why I don’t go out to drink as much as I used to and how you never see somebody like that until they are. I definitely learned not to give my friend too many drinks, and that he apparently has a lot of insecurities bottled up inside. Now I’m worried about all the times I gave him shit, he looked to take it in stride when in fact he was boiling with rage or being really self-conscious inside.
Cliffs:
1. Spontaneous decision to enter a beerpong competition and hit on some girls
2. Win whiskey, drink with said girls
3. Friend gets really drunk, isn’t let into a bar
4. Dude cries most of the night we try to calm him down
5. I didn’t close
