I will confidently state I know more Irish people than anyone on here that's not Irish.

Part of my job is picking up foreign language local lingo which helps smooth out interactions.

Irish speak English. They have lessons at school about the traditional language sure. Noone speaks it daily life except an isolated few. Even those will use English in most of their interactions as most people won't understand them otherwise.

The reason for this is because use of the Irish language was prohibited, starting with the Statute of Kilkenny, during British occupation. It could not be used in courts, or schools or to conduct business. Towns and cities had their names Anglicised i.e. Dubh Linn became Dublin, Béal Feirste became Belfast etc. Repeat this form of cultural genoside for hundreds of years until 1922 in Ireland and 2022 in Northern Ireland and eventually you end up with what you describe today.

One time a few years ago, I was walking down the street talking to my mom on the phone in Korean - (she can't speak English fluently.)

Some random drunk white guy screams in my face "Speak English!!" and some other unintelligible shit right into my ear as I'm walking by. I get off the phone and replied 'WTF is wrong with you." This isn't some Jussie Smollet made up story. This really happened. It was in Queens NY on Christmas Eve and there was snow everywhere.

This led to a argument where we started physically fighting on the street. There was slipping and sliding everywhere due to the snow. The guy was clearly drunk because he had a beer bottle in his hand trying to smash my head with, but I pushed him onto the floor. Then another beer bottle smashed open after it fell out of his jacket pocket.

Long story short, I managed to get him down and punched him several times in the face. He didn't want to fight anymore, so I left.

So if I wasn't a fit guy that could fight and I went to the cops instead, the guy can simply claim "free speech" and didn't do anything wrong. When in reality, the guy was harassing a completely innocent person with racism. The guy was being a racist asshole.
