As we know, MMA is considered a national sport in Brazil. And second only to soccer. A country in which martial arts and fighting is extremely popular. Vale Tudo, Capoiera, BJJ, and the list goes on.

I'm not sure if MMA is nationally accepted as a sport in the USA. It could be #3, #4, or #5 in popularity, I wouldn't know.

My question is, aside from Brazil and the USA. In which country is MMA likely to become the #1 sport in popularity?

My opinion on this is that there needs to be recognised figures for the country to get behind and support. Brazil has so many Brazilian MMA fighters that people can move and support. Imagine if Canada had 15 GSP's. I think Conor McGregor can start the MMA growth in Ireland and Irelands number one sport could become MMA.

MMA is somewhat popular in Brazil, but definitely not like you see in the UFC promos. We have people here who train UFC too. And some months ago, my mother talked about a patient at work who was a "MSN fighter".

Probably a keyboard warrior from Sherdog...

Really? From what I've researched, MMA seems huge in Brazil

I'm not convinced it'll be the number 1 sport in any nation simply because some folks have soft stomachs and don't like fighting. It's not a small crowd, either. Lots of people are simply adverse to violence.

It'll be #1 in a country that has no other sports.

Definitely not small compared to other countries. But the average joe will confuse MMA and UFC, and will hardly know other fighter than Anderson, Aldo, JDS... and the chances of said person know about other promotions like WSOF or even national ones like Jungle Fight are close to zero.

I would say it could become that popular in Canada, but they love their hockey. So probably no country.

with vlad putin rubbing shoulders with fedor and watching him beat ass, maybe it could become huge in Russia. Not sure if #1 is possible - probably not

I'm pretty sure Formula 1 is more popular in Brazil than MMA.

Brazil has had many great pilots, like Arton Senna or Emerson Fittipaldi

My thoughts exactly. I know its safe to safe that most MMA fans aren't exactly neural anatomists. But this guy is on a whole new level of poor intelligence.
