under the points scoring section, it has no mention of regaining guard. Do you not get points for shrimping from side control back to guard? or would they just class that as a sweep?

Its a reversal, not a sweep. Like if ur bottom of side, roll him and obtain side. No points, just saves you.

thats pretty much what my instructor said that. Like if you're mounted the only thing that you can do is get the guy off you either by bumping and rolling him(upa) or the elbow escape.

fair do's. i thought it might just be a grey area.

If I'm not mistaken, a sweep is when you go from a neutral position (guard) to an advantage position (mount). A reversal is when you come from a disadvantage position (bottom mount), to a neutral position (top guard).

I have never been at a compe where you get points for regaining guard.

A sweep has to be initiated from some sort of guard so:

I have guard, they start to pass, I turtle to defend and push them over geting top position (even in their guard)... that ends up being a sweep.

On the other hand I'm in bottom side control. I roll them over and end up top side control. No points for a sweep there.

Seems kinda wrong that in the first situation I get points even though I'm defending in the course of the sweep and may end up in guard, where as in the second case I would end up in a much more advantagious position. Just the way it is though.
