Though much of last night's card was mediocre, I came away with new respect for Bisping and Davis for different reasons. I have been a Bisping critic and I am still not a fan, but one must have respect for what he showed last night. He was active, showed good movement and boxing, and frankly was handily winning the stand-up. Yes, he seemed to lack power, but his punches were getting through and there is a cumulative effect. That probably means he will never win a #1 contender fight because his opponent will have five rounds to knock him out, but he is nevertheless talented and worthy of the top 5.
Davis was impressive because of the improvement he showed over his rather dismissal stand-up display against Lil Nog. He looked like a different guy last night - he was aggressive, showed an impressive jab, and perhaps most importantly, Davis was confident. Of course, his opponent had something to do with it, but this fight will give Davis confidence going into his next fight, which could very well be against a striker. I also think Davis showed what most fans want to see from an athlete, which is improvement in the weakest part of a fighter's arsenal. If only we could see more strikers develop their wrestling.
