I don't support deporting nonviolent immigrants who entered the country illegally. Aside from that, I don't have any strong opinions on immigration. Maybe a discussion could sway me one way or another. To get the ball rolling, let me ask: If we are going to grant citizenship to people who entered our country illegally, why have border security?

I don't think about this issue too much, but I consider myself a moderate. I'm for a stronger border, but also believe people already here are entitled to basic human rights. In regards to a path to citizenship for illegals already here; I have mixed feelings about it. Not exactly a one-dimensional issue.

It is a federal crime to enter the U.S. ilegally.

Until that changes, we're technically not enforcing our own laws.

It's not rocket science.

Just ramp up enforcement, and investigations, and ramp up the penalties for getting caught. Long stints in jail, and ever longer for repeat offenses. Get local LEO involved, this way they have less time to spend at dunkin Donuts or Seven Eleven, and wont get so fat.

Because of the huge costs associated with deporting them. And I mean to offer them a legal status and a path rather than citizenship.

Additionally, we have been turning back hundreds of thousands a year. Border patrols make a serious difference.

Yes as if the war on drugs wasnt enough to effectively destroy the 4th add the war on illegals as an excuse.

A simple solution, reform immigration policy so it fits the labour needs and the illegals will now walk out in order to either enter legally or simply because they cant get a job anymore.

That would require us to stop exploiting illegal labor, and we are probably not willing to do that. Democrats and Republicans alike love their cheap laborers.

Canada does fine with mexican cheap labour i have a current worker that has gone 3 times to Canada for temporary work. A sensible temporary worker program would work fine for the US to limit illegal migration, simply because the US has a pretty big backyard in latin america and the cold war is over.

I'm fine with securing the border and a path to citizenship for illegals already here who are not criminals and are working or trying to work.

Would this reform include letting those already here to stay? What about those that have been waiting patiently on the other side of the border? If we allow more people to be here legally and work, those that waited like a good little MexiCAN should get first dibs.

Now how will you guarantee the ones here illegally will just leave? There are plenty of unemployed illegals. And once you start your reforms, how do you keep illegals out if they still want to come?

My way can work with or without reforms to our migrant worker policy. My way is also more encompassing.

1.- Those already there would either fit the criteria or be kicked out.

2.- Waited for what? you talk as if all immgrants were just lining up for the same kind of job, some immigrants are better suited for temporary work, others for more permanent job, some for unskilled jobs and other for skilled jobs.

3.- Because believe it or not living in America without a job isnt that great, its actually pretty pathetic considering the hate you guys have for the poor.

4.- Your way is like trying to eradicte drugs, its not going to happen because its not addressing stronger economic forces at work. Its actually making the problem worse.

Well I don't know what to say- we just won't do it.

At this point American politicians are so bipartisan that i doubt your congress will be able to do anything at all anytime soon.

The status quo will remain.

I agree with most of what you are saying in this thread. But I still favor deportations of criminals and a future enforcing of our laws. I also want a 'wall' more so the border fence completed and double layered or reinforced on key areas. I also want a pathway to citizenship for many illegals currently here who are not criminals I want them to come out of the shadows. I realize it is not fair to all those who have tried for years around the world to get to America or want citizenship but life isn't fair. I also see it as a means to end the current debacle.

Do you understand that the USA cannot support every other loser ass bitch in this world? Stay in your own country. It is realistic economics. Our country would collapse. You will see this starting to happen in sweden. Sweden has a great system but it is predicated on the vast majority of people working and not freeloading off the government.

That would be pointless drug cartels build tunnels and most illegals nowadays just overstay their visas.

Literally nothing in the OP pertains to the regular kind of Immigration, with millions of applications processed and accepted in the U.S every single year.

Your thread should have been titled "Illegal Immigration Debate".

Because of the huge costs associated with deporting them. And I mean to offer them a legal status and a path rather than citizenship.

Additionally, we have been turning back hundreds of thousands a year. Border patrols make a serious difference.

So you think the government should try to prevent people who do not go through a certain process from immigrating, but if people are successful at circumventing that process, they should go unpunished? Maybe that's the best option, I don't know. None of the options seem attractive to me. I'll say this though, rewarding stealth sounds like a game: "These are the rules. We have Immigrants and Border Patrol. Border Patrol tries to stop Immigrants from getting through. If an Immigrant can get past Border Patrol, he gets to stay."

Can you expand on this?

I think it's wrong to characterize people trying to leave an extremely violent place where there's no rule of law as "loser bitch ass". I would probably be okay with deportation if we weren't sending them back to a part of the world run by drug cartels. Aside from your hateful rhetoric, you make a valid point: our government services could get strained to a breaking point if we were to allow everyone to immigrate to our country.
