I'm Suprised this Isn't a Thing (music related)

An interesting semi-related post I found on another forum:

honestly though it was cause Chester Bennington (the vocalist) was on drugs during the whole Hybrid theory / Meteora Era. the sad cold truth about most musicians / aritsts. most, if not all of them wrote their best works while they were either depressed or on drugs. after Chester Bennington got cleaned (which is good) the band just fell off.

And to give a few notable examples.

Chester Bennington when he was on Drugs. wrote

  • Hybrid Theory
  • Meteora
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was depressed and on Drugs wrote

  • Nevermind
  • In Utero
Marilyn Manson, clearly was on drugs (watch the (S)aint video)

  • Antichrist Superstar
  • The Golden Age of Grotesque
  • Mechanical Animals
  • Holy Wood
Nine Inch Nails - Trent Reznor was on coke (I believe don't know the exact drug) when he wrote

  • The Downward Spiral
  • The Fragile
  • Broken (EP)
Dude the list goes on lmao

Minutes to Midnight was actually the album that killed my soul. . . Waited four years since Meteora and we get THAT? It was the beginning of the end.

I liked a few songs on it.
'In The End' was probably overplayed and that can seemingly ruin a good song (look at 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'), but seeing it live made me love it again.

The whole Doom Metal genre is basically early Black Sabbath. Electric Wizard sounds a lot like the first Black Sabbath songs.

You're right, there were A FEW good songs on that album. But the rest. . . No.

It's a HUGE tonal shift from their earlier albums.

Honestly, even Meteora was a disappointment compared to Hybrid Theory.

I like all three albums but in terms of new music I have no idea.
For about 2 years now I just haven't been interested in music. I think it's because i'm so deeply into films, MMA and football that I just haven't got room to be deeply into something else.

Music, for me, is for a very specific time: When I'm drinking and fucking around on the computer. That's when the music comes out.

Other than that, yeah, I'm not fucking with music much.

I used to be really into it, going to gigs and festivals etc. But for me, if I'm interested in something I have to be balls deep interested in it, like obsessed with it. I find it hard to just have a vague interest in a lot of things like most people do.

I'm much the same way but I don't think it's a good thing. Sure I've made great strides towards a goal in a short amount of time but the eventual loss of interest is inevitable were as a more casual interest over decades would of yielded a more successful, fruitful, and enjoyable experience.

M&M’s first album was funny and goofy, plus he didn’t take himself too serious, then…

I'm the opposite. I love bands that change and evolve their sound.

Some of my favorite bands like Faith no more and ween release albums that sound like a different band on each track --- I love that variety (you can still have a cohesive album doing that and these bands are great examples of that )

I'm a big fan of incubus. Most people complain that they like science era incubus or only up to morning view then changed too much. I love that they change and have a different sound every album even if I do like those earlier albums better . Same with silverchair, lots of old silverchair fans complain about their post freakshow work is not grunge or hard enough . But their best work was easily later in their career with diorama.

The cardigans best work imo was an album called gran turismo in the middle of their catalog. They completely flipped their own sound on its head and it's brilliant. It's my favorite album. they could have easily made a ton more albums like life and first band on the moon and probably sold many more records doing so. Instead they experimented and created a great addition to their catalog.

I think what turns me off to bands the most is not changing enough. If I already have an album of a certain sound why would I want another when I can listen to that album. Sometimes it's nice to have a song or two that remind you of that old style but not complete albums worth

Oh, I'm fine with it if the change is a good one. Judas Priest is a good example of a band whose sound has changed a lot over the course of their career and stayed awesome.

But then you have bands like the aforementioned Linkin Park who change their sound and the results are almost criminal. What's even shittier is that I'm almost certain that they only did it for the money.

Or to give you another example, look at Metallica. Look at how many people got pissed when Load/Reload--and especially St. Anger--came out.

Reznor was on Coke and is an alcoholic (and before anyone starts, a recovering alcoholic).

RHCPs last album with Kiedis still using was californication. Downhill for the music since then.
