Yeah I am the same. Although i think I hit the wall at 1450 for awhile. its been a long time since I played. Playing time limit games adds a lot of stress to my meta-game and having kids ate up a lot of time I used to dedicate to chess.
I always played a bit, but for the first 100 games on Chess.com i was in the low 800's. kept trying all kinds of dumb Gambits i thought were cool like Danish and it bit me in the ass a lot. Then i settled down and worked on each opening. I still enjoy King's and Queen's Gambit on occasion, but playing Black is where i find i shine. Sicilian Defense is easily my favored opening and I feel it out and decide if I am going dragon or Najdorf. I like French occasionally, but it always slows the game and closes the board. Scandanavian is fun but treacherous as I just don't "feel" that one.. Caro Kann I have been looking into. Indian defense is more my cup of tea tho.
I also spent a lot of time experimenting with Chess 960. I enjoy the random setup element as I found it helped me look at the movesets of pieces in new ways. Takes away the advantages of people who memorize openings and there are a lot of those.
