I know neck cranks are illegal and I have an idea of what a neck crank is in some forms, obviously twisting someones head like you want to pop it off or break their neck is illegal... but there's one or two holds I'm not sure if they qualify as cranks...
for one when in top gaurd reaching behind your opponents head and pulling it basically towards their own balls... I' not sure what its called but i've seen it in a fight, I don't know how old or amateur the footage was so.. i wasn't sure of it, but it seems like a fairly effective hold for anyonoe with long enough arms to pull it off. Does that qualify as a neck crank?

It's called a "can opener," and it does qualify as a neck crank.

any submission where you are pulling on the head to cause pain in the neck/spine to force your opponent to tap is illegal in most if not all grappling tournaments.

I'm confused, am I to understand that neck cranks are also illegal in MMA? Also, what about Bas Rutten's Exorcist move?

It depends on the event, obviously. Thats like saying, "elbows are illegal in MMA".

In MMA neck cranks are allowed, but in grappling they usually aren't in tournaments.. I know ADCC banned spine cranks, but I'm not sure about neck cranks, I'd have to check that out.

sorry for the double post but here are the illegal moves according to a couple different websites.

Full Nelson' and 'Crucifix'
No striking of any kind
No eye gouging or fish hooking
No grabbing the ears
No hair pulling
No finger or toe holds
No thumbing
No scratching and pinching
No kicking
No biting
No touching groin area
No hands, knees or elbows on face
No slippery substances allowed on body or clothing

so really it says nothing explicitly about spine and neck cranks only the full nelson and crucifix.

Yes brother that is highly illegal, except in MMA, I use it liberally in MMA when a dude is trying to break me down in his guard, or I need a diversion to pass. Don't do it in BJJ as it is bad and a form of cowardice that will be reciprocated on you ten fold.

Neck cranks come in alot of forms, shapes and sizes. Having a herniated disc in my neck right now, I would recommend you guys stay away from neck cranks as much as possible and if caught in a guillotine, just tap. Even if you can get out of it. Just tap and restart. Especially in practice. In competition, fine fight it.

When I train now, I told every dude I train with, if you neck crank me, I am going to do the following:
1.) tap
2.) get up
3.) use your fucking head as a focus mit till:
a.)someone pulls me off
b.) you are dead
c.) you beat me up
which ever comes first. I did tell them though if they need to feel the exhileration of neck cranking me, just yell neck crank and I will tap for them.

Also be careful with heel hooks. Ankle locks are a little sketchy as are leg locks. But especially heel hooks man. Achilles heal injuries are never right again.. Good luck and happy rolling.

I've got beef with some competition illegal moves. FILA rules (and some others) ban jaw locks and knee grinds, which means they probably ban moves like the following:

The thing with this knee spike/'face' crush is that if used properly, you can get the knee under the chin or on the side of the neck and turn it into a straight blood joke/throat crush - a submission that should be legal. I actually use this move fairly often with a unique hand grip/clinch that turns it into a pretty effective bastardized gogoplata. It doesn't usually get locked in quite well enough for a sub, but it opens up triangles, bicep slicers, and scrambles for me regularly. I just know if I use it in competition, however, some stupid ref will call me on a face crush because he doesn't understand the series I'm running. If I get the chance to use it in a tournament soon, I'm gonna go for it and argue with/explain to the officials if they try and call me on it.

whenever I face an asshole that uses the can opener during training I turn up my intensity and really make him pay.

i cant stand the feeling of a hard neck crank. its has no place in practice.
