Illegal elbows question

I usually rewatch the fights of the guys who are fighting on upcoming PPVs

During the Conor and Mendes fight, Conor was throwing some elbows from the bottom and Chad seemed to look at Herb as if they were illegal and they did look like it

What was the difference between those elbows and the Jones/Hammill elbows? Was it because Conor was on his back?

*disclaimer* I'm not trying to say Conor cheated or should have lost.. There's plenty of Conor hate on Sherdog already. I'm actually curious about it

Big John explained it that 12 - 6 elbows have to be coming straight down. Any angle on them whatsoever and they're legal. The elbows Conor was throwing were 6 -12
