If you could give your child one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would tell him: Don't live a life of crime. Don't be a gangster. It's not "cool" or "hip" to steal stuff and punch people in the back of the neck because they "wronged" you. Don't follow in your fathers footsteps. Hip hop is fun to listen to, sure, but don't get sucked into that way of life. It's evil. You take the hip out of hip hop when you do a drive by or go to jail.

I would tell him that touching my steak will lead to broken fingers.
That should get him through life.

I think that the best advice is for them to understand that what they do between 15-25 will shape the rest of their life. It s tough shit because one is still a child at 15, but doors start closing already.

When they turn 18 years old I would advise them to open a Roth IRA with Fidelity (or a similar financial service) and deposit $6000 (the yearly maximum) and invest in a Target Date fund for 2060, ie FDKVX.

Also to set aside an emergency fund for 4 months of living expenses in a bank, buy $10,000 of iBonds (max per year) , and probably invest the rest in a broad stock index fund.

Sacrifice today for a better future tomorrow.
