Let's say the 4 branches get into it for whatever reason.

    Who ultimately prevails and why?

Or put another way: which branch is the most lethal and why

    Army
    Navy
    Air Force
    Marines

Airforce, they'll bomb shit, but Mike Armyquitter is the real winner in this scenario.

Can the navy really project its power onto the landmass of the United States? I see it being limited to some coastal areas around its bases.

Edit: I checked numbers, the navy has less than half of the army's personnel when reserves and national guard are taken into account. It also has a couple thousand less planes.

Depends on where it took place.

In the continental US/North America, Army. Not even close.

Navy is all about overseas force projection, but really has no forces of its own to project. Neither SEALs nor Seabees are true infantry and neither are capable of taking and holding territory the way that Army and Marines can.

Air Force, likewise, can project force, but has none of its to project to take and hold territory. Similar to the Navy, a handful of SF types and its Security Forces don't have anything close to a true infantry capability.

Marines theoretically have the most varied capability, but they're just as dependent on the Navy and AF for strategic mobility as Army. Not only that, Marines don't have the hitting power or the staying power of Army.

A much more interesting scenario is if you mean Navy as in Department of Navy, which is Navy + Marine Corps. In this case, Army still owns CONUS, Germany, Korea and parts of the Mideast, but anywhere else, Navy+Marine Corps teams wins.

But, if we're going to allow that, then we should make it really interesting and rewind back to the last time the US was engaged in total conventional war. In WWII, what we call the US Air Force was the US Army Air Corps, then later the US Army Air Forces before it was separated into a separate service.
