What if Roy Jones retired after beating Ruiz in 2003? Where would he rank all-time?

-Wins over Hopkins, Toney, Griffin, Hill and Ruiz
-First fighter since Bob Fitzsimmons to win titles from MW to HW
-Only fighter to start career at JMW and win a HW title

The most talented boxer of all time. The only one to move from 160 and win a HW title. Maybe not the best ever but in the conversation. He could've retired after the first Tarver match as well.

He tarnished his legacy with all those ko losses but in his prime he had a chance against anyone. The win against Ruiz wasn't anything spectacular. Historically MW's and LHW's have had success at HW against slow contenders like Ruiz. Had he beaten Lewis then we might be talking GOAT.

he could and should have retired after that, but the big problem was that he beat a belt holder that is not held in high esteem in the HW division, so comparing him to the likes of Fitzsimmons is kind of mute, and he also beat an early version of Hopkins, a fat out of shape Toney(when was he in shape, please no-one tell me the Nunn fight) and Griffin is not really anything special

he had so much potential and should have gone to Europe and destroyed Eubank,Benn,Collins and the German guy...he would have easily disposed of all of those guys, but had a massive hang up about travelling and didnt ever want to take giant risks as he was always concerned about how boxing would affect his health, then when it was too late and his skills were gone, decided he wanted to fight on and took some terrible beatings and losses, which has affected his health.....

probably the best p4p fighter i will ever see in my life

After the first Tarver fight was when he overcame adversity and proved his championship heart. It would have been the perfect time to retire.

He's already an ATG. Leaving after the first Tarver fight would have improved his legacy, but not by much. He's not the only all-time top 10 or 20 to have lost some fights after he became shot to pieces. In his prime, he was close to invincible, and said prime lasted long enough.

The only real issue with him would be quality of opposition. He's one of those guys that had a chance to beat anyone in a head to head matchup.

Lets not forget he was negotiating a scrap with Tyson after Ruiz. That would've made him Top3 all-time if he had won.

beating him in 02 would have made him a top3 all timer?

If he won and then retired, maybe. The only knock against him, i don't consider his record weak really, he was just that much more dominant than everyone else at the time, but the only knock would be in his prime he tested positive for steroids.

Does Lennox get a ton of credit for beating Mike in 02? I don't think so.
He gets a lot of credit. Many see it as his career defining win, along with Holyfield(who was a better cruiserweight than heavyweight), and Vitali(even though at the time no one knew how really good that win would become)

Nah. He doesn't.

Lennox is one of those guys who basically beat everyone in the era...But Mike was shot to shit when they fight and there are constant debates as to what would have happened if they had fought in their primes.

Yeah. Maybe. I dunno.

He certainly was one of the most talented fighters I have ever seen.

I don't know about that, maybe a regular sized one, or is that an oxymoron? :D

Well after seeing Roy's junk in those leaked pics.....the term BBC itself much be ironic.....not that theres anything wrong with that

Even with some of the losses in the latter part of his career, if he would have fought zsolt and some of the other international fighters Id hold him in even higher regard

By the time he was willing to fight internationally and travel overseas (in fucking Russia no less) he was completely shot to shit
