Lets look at an example, like someone else here said, why is David Beckham so popular? At no point in his career was he the best player in a European team, let alone close to the best player in the world. When he played for Madrid he wasn't fit to lace up the boots of the likes of his time mates, Zidane, Ronaldo & Figo.

Beckham was the weakest of the "Galacticos", yet he's the only one who is famous outside of football supporters.
