and had taken pictures in poses that were considered less-than-respectful towards the military, how do you all think this whole thing would have gone down? Would it be okay for someone to wear military attire to prom if they have no connection to the military? Would this count as appropriation, in your eyes?

I honestly don't care about the Chinese dress all that much. Definitely a tacky choice, and the pictures they took in it certainly aren't helpful.

Strong username to post correlation.

If she wears camo, nobody cares.

If she pretends to be the military, that’s a crime.

Pretty simple.

She's not exactly going around pretending to be Chinese, so I'm not sure why you assumed she'd be pretending to be in the military. Just wearing military clothes to prom, maybe making some goofy gesture in a picture that seemed to convey disrespect to the military.

Honestly I think this comes down to a matter of respect. If one respects Chinese culture, one might have a problem with her wearing the dress. The same goes for military culture; if you have a family member in the military, or were in the military yourself, you might be pretty upset to see someone wearing military gear to a prom, especially if they aren't connected to the military in any way!

Another example would be someone wearing a blackbelt while not being one. If it's okay for her to wear the dress, why can't a stranger with no connection to bjj wear a blackbelt around?

Teenage girl wears red dress to prom, let's have a discussion as a nation about it, lol.

Talk about scraping the bottom of the victim complex barrel when some girl's dress is newsworthy.

I said this in another thread, but some people look for reasons to be offended. It’s insecurity.

I wish white people got all pissed off about "cultural appropriation"... minorities wouldn't have shit in this country.

Accusing people of cultural appropriation is racist. Everyone should be welcome to everything. No matter their race

We'r not whiny like bitches tho. So feel free to use and enjoy everything white people have brought to this world, no matter what race you are.

With that said. I'm pretty sure 99.99% of Asians have no problem with this dress.

Haven't you heard? White people don't have culture

Is that the girl with the nice ass(unless she's underage, in which case nevermind)? Is she famous for something or should we just know her name because some losers got bummed out about a dress?

Folks who get butt hurt about "cultural appropriation" have nothing better to do IMO . . . what was tacky about the dress? How were the pictures not helpful? (whatever that means).

And no, kids who wear military style attire to a prom aren't being disrespectful.

I skimmed the twitter replies earlier in the week. They pretty much went like this:

White people: You're a terrible person. Don't you know that outfit is extremely sacred to Chinese people
Chinese people: I think you look great in that dress.
Also Chinese people: We sell them to tourists by the boatload here.

Alternate hypothetical question: What if an Asian person wore a wedding dress to a party? Gasp! Oh wait... Nobody would care...

That said who gives a shit. I do know the whole "wearing a military uniform" thing while not being in the service has some gray areas to it.

It's one thing to be a wannabe version of DK or Ramones and wear an old Value Village Class A coat and it's an entirely different thing to fake being a vet and try to get vet benefits and shit.

Duh . . . wife beaters and all of that redneck crap that's supposed to be a knock against whitey.

And cowboy boots . . . don't forget about the cowboys.

You can wear it, but you just can't have a name and rank on it . . .
