If everyone goes to college, won't it just be 13th-16th grade?

It's the result of wages falling so far behind inflation everywhere but the trades and educated fields. Now people are realizing you either have to join a trade (preferably when you're younger) or get an education. Wages on the lower rungs of the income ladder aren't really livable anymore.

College doesn't guarantee you a life of not working at McDonalds and Walmart anymore and every year, it gets worse. It's already been discussed as a separate issue in another thread. Computers, automization, and robots are replacing people in various sectors of society. As someone already stated, even the once bullet proof STEM degree isn't so bullet proof anymore.

See this post? This is you moving the goal posts.

But to respond to this bullshit you just puked on the boards. Nobody should bother with college then because of...Computers, automization, and robots...

I simply find the argument that if less people went to college, the job marketplace would stop putting pressure on people to have college degrees to be a fallacious one. It's premised on the idea that the marketplace wants people with college degrees because of the overabundance of degreed people. Whereas, the truth is that the elimination of low skilled work has driven people to seek degrees in an attempt to compete for the remaining jobs. When the local factory is cutting 40% of it's workforce, people with degrees have an advantage in not being part of that 40%. That puts pressure on people to be more credentialed than the other guy in the hope that their credentials will allow them to keep/find employment than the less credentialed. When the choice is between $50k of debt or being unemployed, the debt seems a safe risk. And this isn't a recent phenomenon or even a local one. It's only become more exaggerated as the speed of technological innovation and outsourcing reduces the amount of low skill job opportunities in our economy.

Are you stating any credentials is better than no credentials, even in fields unrelated to said any credentials?

If the fields that are related to said credentials are growing, and employment is abound, than that ought to mitigate the financial risks.

People need to make these choices at some point. If they feel their chances of finding employment with that particular credential is not good enough for the investment, than they ought to pick another one.

You shouldn't be scared of a more educated America....

It helps with innovation...

I am under the impression that University is not actually about " becoming more educated" but competition using academics as the format. From my experience it feels like a sort of academic figure skating, or gymnastics or Olympic diving in which the object is get close to the perfect score. Yes, hopefully you will learn things along the way, but is mostly on your own anyways, and that also makes it more akin to a competition.

The faculty is just the officiating crew, event staff, and judges. Everyone is competing against the perfect score for formal recognition from the college.

Are you fucking illiterate? Read my post again. I said getting a college degree doesn't guarantee you a job after you graduate, which is true. There's no shortage of college graduates working low age jobs, including McDonalds and Walmart. Anyone with half a brain knows that.

What's your point with that statement then? That nobody should go to college? Or are you just rambling? A college degree was never something that guaranteed anyone anything. It was just something that helped. Always. And still does. So I don't know what your fucking point is...

Was your point that "a college degree doesn't guarantee a job in that field, so therefore we shouldn't waste money offering free community college for all?"

WHAT WAS YOUR FUCKING POINT?

We have a service based economy. People need to go to college because it is extremely difficult to get a good paying job without a degree.

Don't blame socialism, blame capitalism. So many people want to go to college because that's what the market demands. And companies perpetually devaluing labor doesn't really help.

Wrong, we have democrats and socialists in control of these institutions and influencing them. Most kids would be better off taking out a business loan and failing than going through school and getting a degree for a job there isn't a market for. That way they'll have business experience and will have acquired real world skills instead of reading about application that they won't remember in 2 years. Oh, and to top it off they'll have got experience and knowledge in something they love!

I would marry a girl with that kind of talent no questions asked.

You're a vegan and an atheist, it's not like it takes much to have an impression on you :p

America. Where the stupid have been duped into hating education, healthcare and a livable minimum wage. Even though all 3 things would benefit them massively.. But but SOCIALISM.

I always imagine someone driving a beatup old pickup on his way to his minimum wage job. Gunrack and confederate flag ofc. Weird Al´s Trigger Happy playing on the radio :)

are you serious?

are you serious?

Yeah I'm serious. I wanna know if there is more substance to his ramblings beyond "we shouldn't off community college to everyone because of robots..."

Is there something wrong with having a better-educated country?

The idea is that college education has, on the lower end of colleges, become quite dumbed down, and many people are there that shouldn't be in higher education at all. Quality>Quantity.

I've got no opposition to paying for college, but it should be like Germany where there is a strict national exam, and if you pass, the state will pay. But of course, we can't have nice things because that would be racism.

Yeah I'm serious. I wanna know if there is more substance to his ramblings beyond "we shouldn't off community college to everyone because of robots..."

Where did I say people shouldn't go to college because of robots, you dumb fuck? I was talking about a totally different subject, but your tiny brain couldn't comprehend.

Holy fucking shit you're an idiot.

You are talking about something different from what was said.

That's basically what would happen with the Bernie plan.

I've never read where he proposes to eliminate SAT/ACT considerations or GPA or any sort of entrance requirements. And, of course, it would only apply to state schools. So you still have to get good grades and score high on a standardized to get in (to a state school) and once you're in, the state pays for it. Pretty much the exact same as Germany and every other developed (and most developing) countries.

But I understand that absolutely ANY opportunity to ridicule racism claims must be seized.

Getting a loan for a business these days is probably harder than getting a loan for school, and getting into school.
