If everyone goes to college, won't it just be 13th-16th grade?

You have to be an absolute fucking moron if you don´t think educating more people is a good idea. But then I noticed TS and everything became clear. But hey, flipping burgers with your kids gives lots of quality time.

All of you "How is a more educated populace a bad idea?" folks are missing the point.

People aren't against education, they just don't want to pay for everyone to have free college.

in countries with heavily subsidized or free tuition, not everyone gets into college. It's not like you just sign up and go. You still have to demonstrate your academic abilities to get accepted.

If anything, for profit colleges ensure that more deadbeats will go to college so long as they can pay their way.

Oh my goodness? So that means people will be more educated in general? Sounds horrible educating our entire nation! There's no way that could ever pay off! Fucking socialists. Must be the same people who think healthcare is a personal right.

We should be fostering the next generation of minds and praising the notion of the advanced education of our future leaders; If that means having it publical funded, so be it.....however, we should raise the standards immensely (no more "c"'s get degrees) and should be exclusive to only fields that will provide economic / scientific innovation and or well being to society.

Trades should be funded as well more pushed at a high school level for those who want to partake in them.

Wich is just plain stupid. But i´m guessing those are the kind of people who wouldn´t get into college anyways. Well maybe barber college.

First, that response is a response to the TS's point. He didn't say anything about cost. His argument was that an education would be less of a mark of distinction if it were universally available. Try to follow the discussion. The OP was literally about 20 words long.

Second, taking your new argument into account, the investment likely pays for itself in increased productivity over the long run, and it's not that large anyway. There are lots of ways to raise the money or shift funds to cover that.

You know they said the same thing about high school...

Gee having high school ruined this country

Having a highly educated population that has a college degree or technical training in a job field is socialism!!! Lol
Oh my lord

Here in the UK the last Labour government decided that everyone should go to university and get a degree, regardless of inconvienent shit like intelligence, ability, talent, dedication and work ethic. The end result being devalued degrees and a bankrupt education system that has killed the access to free higher education that we did have. Another succsesful lefty policy, well done guys.

But, but, "this time it will be different", right?

This is such a cliche at this point, but it has to be repeated.

Imagine if we did the same thing with sports teams at the college level.

EVERYONE GETS TO PLAY!!!! Regardless of any sort of skill, experience, physical ability. Would the quality of the team go up or down?

Will we have "No Child Left Behind" when we start getting the 50% drop-out/failure rates? So that way, everyone passes?

Everyone gets to play. Everyone gets to win.

What point will a college degree even hold?

Um, are you forgetting about the whole "education" thing?

Yes. Trying to convince Americans jobs like manufacturing are not 100% necessary for a healthy economy is getting embarrassing. Not everybody is supposed to go to college, and it is 100% NOT the answer to a better economy. It's a scam. Don't buy it.

We have a service based economy. People need to go to college because it is extremely difficult to get a good paying job without a degree.

Don't blame socialism, blame capitalism. So many people want to go to college because that's what the market demands. And companies perpetually devaluing labor doesn't really help.

The Right lies about manufacturing not being necessary, to benefit the billionaires who want a bit more by hurting Americans, and the left lies about college being the answer to fixing the economy. Think Independently, and know they are both wrong and pushing the wrong things for the wrong reasons.

You don't go to college for an education. That's what the internet is for.

You go to college to get a degree.

This is such an ignorant statement...

You obviously don't know any better and it's pitiful; it literally fills me with pity.

The idea is that it is an investment. More and more jobs require a high skill level, you train people up they take higher paying jobs and pay more back in tax than they would have if they didn't get a degree. As I stated earlier and other have as well not everyone gets to go you have high standards of entry so only those with a high level of succeeding get in.

Not exactly you still had to pass A levels and have a high level of education to get into any real degree. The only ones that were devalued were those that were never valued in the first place like Social Media studies, sociology and so on. His problem is that Labour killed off the trade training that left us short on practical skills. What Blairs New Labour brought in was actually more like the current American system anyone gets to go as long as you pay. So you are in fact arguing against the current US system where as long as you have the money you can go study for a degree.

Again Free education and everyone going to college/Uni are not the same thing. You have that now in the US as long as you have the money or are willing to get into large debt anyone gets to study for a degree. Free education just means those that go don't have to pay until they are paying back through taxes. The standards for getting into college/Uni are a separate issue from the cost. You can have very high standards for free education which would mean only those with a high chance of succeeding get to go.

Rather than challenge the cost challenge the entry requirements. Right now you get stupid people who can pay for college and intelligent poor people who don't get to go that's hardly a good system for the country.

Yeah.. Barber college leads to pretty decent jobs in many cases. Better than Starbucks. I know people making good money doing hair, and managing those establishments. If everybody goes to college for free, barber college will be better than 50% of BA degrees, and that's pathetic. Not everybody is supposed to be a "college person" as my ex from Montenegro would put it. People that went to college will be freaking worthless if everybody goes.

Just because everyone can doesn´t mean everybody does. Do you think everyone in Denmark goes to college/Uni?? Do you think Universities just magically lower the acceptance criteria?
