one of my problems - especially with UFC and Bellator - is how generic the product looks.

i grew up on fighting games and van-damme action movies. i think a lot of us did. so my first association with martial arts, action and fighting scenes has a connection to an element of fantasy in narrative and aesthetic.

now i know mma is considered a sport, but it is also obviously part entertainment. the entertainment value of it seems to be created through stupid shit like twitter exchanges and fighters beefing promos.

but the actual events the day of always take place inside. it all looks the same. coupled with the reebok uniformity the product seems to bleed into each other.

i think partly it is the set up. the UFC fighter entrances happen on a narrow, flat path where the Pride entrances were open. they also could use lights and pyro, and the giant screen can be used to create memorable images. not every fighter personally had to make it a spectacle like genki sudo but the option was always there. check out the difference between ufc and pride in the video.

m-1 holds events in an outside setting from time to time.

i think if an mma organization got creative, they can have small and medium sized events in a cherry blossom area with a pagoda in the background or something. the possibilities are endless. and it would make the event and fights more memorable by adding different background setting.

i think that's just one idea.

what other things would you incorporate to make the product more memorable and entertaining?

other ideas could be a legends division and a steroids-are-mandatory league.

different floor material at each event. sand. grass. bush. snow. mud.

Change the colour of the canvas on occasions. Have a stage and ramp like Pride on occasion. Experiment with lighting.

And seriously, celebrity fight as first fight on every main card.

Hell in a cell mma matches, have the fighters fight on top of the cage, maybe we see a choke slam through the cage or somebody judo tossed off the cage into the announcers booth?

Change the tired old format. The homogenization of every event hurts. A PPV needs to stand out. a pride ramp for PPV would be great.
Embrace the occasional freak fight too. UFC 100 and 200 are marquee events with stacked cards. This kind of event shouldn’t be so few and far between.
New Years is typically a good card, they should rebrand it and promote it as a truly special card

Agreed. Nothing wrong with making events a little more unique from one another. I get having generic fight nights and contender series. But the PPVs could be a little unique with each one. It can give it character and make the even more memorable. You don't need things to be as uniform and generic as possible to be considered a sport. If anything, that is one of the things that is hurting others sports like baseball and Nascar as well. Nobody scolfs at the Super Bowl for having an over the top halftime show.
