I suppose I didn't have access to a pistol, but I had some rifles as a kid. I guess that seemed normal to me.

I think I was like 10 years old when I got my first .22 rifle. My parents had to teach me firearm safety first, I had to ask permission to use the rifle and they would accompany me if I was going to go target practice. I didn't start being able to shoot on my own without permission until I was probably 14.

You were taught from an early age to view a firearm as more than a toy. Your parent's de-mystified it and provided structure around it's availability and use. The same cannot be said for rather a lot of children these days that have firearms in their homes. But then, many firearm owners don't even have a proper respect for firearms themselves. They don't practice with them regularly or educate their family about them. Gun culture gets a lot of flack and some of it for good reasons, but gun culture at its most basic is about learning proficient usage of firearms and developing proper respect, knowledge and how to care for a potentially dangerous tool.

It's a stupid idea to try and force gun owners to keep their guns locked up all the time. I have used a gun to stop a break in.

However I have no problem hold a person that just leave a gun out for a child under certain age to be charged with felony child endangerment.
