Why the need for this when they only offer Pan Kids? I can see Adult membership because they have tournaments all year, but kids?

Why they do it makes sense. If it were me though, I'd waive the fee or charge considerably less to do so because the kids only have the one tournament available.

The past couple of Pan Kids have had a lot of issues with he said/she said on kid's ages. The age divisions are 1-2 years apart, and a 12 year old going in a 9 year old division can be a bitch. Parents were saying, "Ah, this kid competed in 20** and he was ** years old!" But of course, parents aren't running around with birth certificates and 10 year olds don't have IDs. So by making them register, each kid has a verified age and it's as fair and organized as possible.

Again, the why is one thing. The price is another.

While we are on this topic, I want to ask Hillary about IBJJF BB certificate and membership registration.

Can you get just pay for your annual membership registration and get your IBJJF ID card every year and still get your next degree on your card?

Do you need to get an IBJJF BB certificate in order to be recognised by them as a BB?

Meaning, an IBJJF 2 degree can sign for a BB registration.

Does that mean I need to get my certificate first then wait the required, then get a certificate of 1 degree, then 2 degree etc.?

Or can I just save my money and just renew my membership card and still be recognised as so and so degree when the time required is fullfilled?

I email them but did not get any response.

thanks

I love Carlos Gracie Jr for making the IBJJF, but I also don't like him for charging for so many things.

Conflict of interest.

You will have to pay the $400 to get the certificate before you can request the degrees. Card won't work.

Not sure if that is true. I don't have a $400 certificate...not that I have any degrees either, but still.

Are you planning to get an IBJJF certificate?

What happen when you will request your 1 degree on your membership card?

Will they ask you to get a certificate first?

Right now I have nowhere to put it. So no. But I'm working on the basis that I am a registered black belt who pays his membership and is under another registered black belt, so to deny me my IBJJF degrees after three years in that situation seems a little ridiculous.

If I HAVE to get a certificate to get my first degree, I will. But $400 for a pretty piece of paper doesn't really make sense to me unless I have an academy and somewhere nice to present it dramatically.

that is where I am confused as the rule is not clear.

"2. In order to request the black belt certificate it is necessary to be currently affiliated to the IBJJF, have gone through a first aid course and be approved in the referee course over the previous 12 months.

3. You may request your 1st degree after 3 years as a black belt. In order to do so it is required that you have renewed your IBJJF membership card every year during the period, have gone through a first aid course and be approved in the referee course over the previous 12 months.

so you can request your 1 degree as long as you keep paying your membership.

am i to assume i need to pay for the certificate as well?

I received my brown belt middle of last year, I want to compete this year. It is my understanding that Black and Brown belts must register as a member first, before we can sign up for ibjjf tournaments? Is the current movement heading toward having purple and blue and white all register first as members before they can sign up for tournaments?

Currently, yes, brown and black belts have to register. Presumably the movement is towards expanding that internationally as the years go on.

made the post then signed up... paid my $35 bucks, have to have my professor sign the form and will mail it in with the photo.

you can email the document and pciture. I emailed them a ID picture I took on my ipod.

i live in the area, just emailed them to see if i can drop it off in person

Makes sense.

I'm not sure what disappoints me more: the fact that this is such a problem, or the fact that it's not surprising.

Kids are the cash cows of bjj. Special programs, "black belt club" events, private lessons- all under the guise of keeping them off meth and under control at home.
