Long story short, I've been a white belt for over 3 years. 4 striper. Lots of tournament experience in bjj, judo, and folkstyle and freestyle wrestling.

I also have a brown belt in Judo too.

I joined an academy a little over a year ago that does promotion based on how many classes you have on your attendance card. I was about to get my blue but I got pulled from the promotion list due to not having enough classes.

I move for work later on this year, should I just rock a blue belt into a new gym since I was already about to be promoted? I don't want to be a sandbagger or one of those white belts that is one for years and years. Alternatively, if I leave should I have my current coach call or send a new gym an email about me or does that even really matter...? Serious question btw.

Honestly, I'm comfortable rolling with upper belts and black belches and can hold my own. At the risk of sounding cocky, I've even been called a purple belt before by someone who told me I should remove my white belt bc they thought I was lying ( when i rolled on vacation )

I will promote you for $20.

I mean, nothing happens if you do, other than you wearing a different belt. Do it if you want to.

If you win the World's a white belt and your coach still doesn't promote you, yes.

He can't do in house promotions. twice a year we have to go to the headquarters and everyone from all the academies get promoted. Since the next one is held later in the year and I'm moving, I missed my shot.

You should just go and roll, belts are almost meaningless imo. Your skills a rent dependent on your belt color.

I for real will promote you. Send me a PM.

Hey asshole. No. It's decided on the mats.

A guy who was a D1 All American wrestler started with us 6 months ago. He got promoted to blue in a few months, and is competing no gi in purple.

He'd fuck you up.

You're a white belt.

This guy is an All American wrestler and had the humility to wear the white belt for a whimw until he was promoted. You should do the same.

No just be a white belt. No one cares. If you roll with a higher belt or someone who accuses you of sandbagging, just tell them what you told us. Promoting your self is the more douchy move.

Did calling me an asshole make you feel better? I hope so. This was probably the most douchiest reply anyone could of given and I figured someone like you would show up. And thanks for telling me he'd fuck me up... I'm sure he probably feels the same way towards you.

Self promotion is a very bad idea. The jiu jitsu community is small and the consequences of people finding out you ranked yourself isn’t something I think a reputation could recover from. Even for something as silly as a blue belt.

Unless there are REAL problems with staying a white belt, I wouldn’t risk it. It’s a tough hand you’ve been dealt you just might have to wait it out as the “tough white belt that gives upper belts a hard time. “

I wouldn't care in all honestly.
If you promoted yourself to blue and went elsewhere and their 3 and 4 stripe white belts eat you alive, they will notice. Class attendance shouldn't matter for a blue belt promotion, purple/brown/black i can see it mattering a bit.

When I went to my current school i was a 3 stripe white belt and blue belt in judo. They wanted to remove my stripes and have me begin again, until i ethered two of his best white belts and did the same to a guy they gave a blue belt to the next month at his own grading in front of both professors.

Every club has their own thing that seems stupid somewhere,at some poit you need to just put up with it.
The mat will talk for you. Ultimately, i couldn't care less for belts now. I'll wear a pink one that says "cuddle me closer" for all i care; one of us will sub each other, we both will learn and improve.

Yeah, I'd hate to see the outcome of the BJJ police scouring their resources to validate a blue belt.

The BJJ community's self-importance is hilarious like this.

I sympathize with your situation. When you move to a new academy, they aren’t going to promote you right out of the gate, so you’d probably be waiting quite a while for your blue. If I were you though, I’d wait. If anyone finds out you promoted yourself, it could be really embarrassing. Maybe you don’t care, but like I said “if I were you.”

If you’re looking to compete up a level, a lot of tournaments allow that, especially for people with judo experience. So if it’s about not sandbagging, maybe look into that.

It can be a bit annoying going to an academy that limits classes to blue belt and above.
Apart from that, there really isn't any reason to promote yourself.

Just stick with the white belt and merc people. You'll get promoted eventually.
If you're competing, I'm sure most comps will let you fight in the blue belt division if you have experience outside.
