For late spring/early summer, I want to start doing sandbag and strongman type of training for GPP, with a bit of bodyweight and free weight exercises worked in. My reasoning is that it is cheap (being a student I'm on a low budget), I can do it at my house and not put up with the people at the YMCA who gather around when they see me deadlifting 225 (funny because that is probaly a warmup for some of you guys), and it effective and a breath of fresh air from pure weight training. I found the following at T-Nation, and would like to find a way to add in bodyweight stuff (pushups, pullups, jump squats --- maybe for warmup), and a little bit of weight exercises (only have 40lbs of free weights and adjustable dumbells --- not olympic. I could pick up another 20-30 for $15, not sure how much I will need to start) like dumbell snatches or others that I don't know of. So here;s the article:

http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=05-184-training

1) Warm up with calisthenics and joint mobility, 5-10 minutes

2) Sled training for 10-12 minutes, nonstop:

Forward drag for 100 ft.
Chest press x 8 reps
Row to chest x 8 reps
Backward drag x 50 ft.
High pulls x 5 reps
Repeat the above sled cycle until 10-12 minutes has ended.

3) Sandbag clean and press, 3 x 6-8 reps

4) Sandbag shoulder and squat, 3 x 5 each shoulder (10 reps per set)

5) Truck push, 6 x 20 seconds each or 1 all-out set of 150 ft. nonstop

6) Sledgehammer circuit (start with one set and then progress to 3 sets total):

Overhead swing x 8
Across left shoulder x 8
Across right shoulder x 8
Left side swing x 8
Right side swing x 8
Overhead swing x 8

---------------
tl/dr --- I'm 18 years old, 5'9, 150lbs, looking to make a GPP program based around sandbag/strongman training styles to gain strength/explosive power.
(max lifts, deadlift 315, squat 235, bench pull 170, never maxed bench [weak])

Ok...

edit: Sorry, didn't mean for that to sound dicky.

What I was trying to say with that eloquent single syllable statement was:

  • It looks like you did some homework
  • If that's what you like, then tear your ass
  • Good luck

Sorry, maybe I should have named the title something different. I'm basically hoping that some people who use this type of training could give me examples of what they do, what works well, what doesn't. Just wondering if anyone could give advice from their experiences.

Edited above post...

Not sure if anyone does any exclusive sandbag training, but I'm sure a lot here do it as a form of conditioning...for that I would think it would jiggle balls!

Try throwing your sandbag from the clean, dman good fun and a nice eplsive pressing move.

I also like starting with the sandbag off to one side of my body and then cleaning it to the opposite shoulder (for example hav the baga gainst the outside of your right leg and clean it up onto your left shoulder in one move), great rotational core exercise.

I have used them in the past. Clean and jerk with sandbags, awesome for grip. Presses, just the instability of it makes it difficult. Also, I see so many people, including on this board, make the sandbags so lite. Whats the point. Make it heavy enough to give yourself a workout. You can bearhug the sandbag and just walk for distance. Do a double overhand grip and walk for distance. Nothing works your grip like consistent sandbag work (may be an overstatement, but it certainly helps.

also , you can simply do throws with them. Use your imagination, Sandbag training is incredible for strength and GPP, IMO.

i train completely with a sandbag and bw exercises. its nice training. i mix up pushups, jump squats and core stuff with 100m carries as one circle and i try to increase my total reps within 20 min. i dont change the weight of the bag until it feels easy. shouldering and throws are the best exercises. i also do floor presses with the bag.

here is a cool article:

and your bench and curl is???

Aside from iron, sandbags and sledgehammers are a totally man-tastic way to train.

I don't pay atention to the actual weights or reps, I just workout on the machine until I get a good pump going.

Awesome.

I aim for a full body pump, if I can not attain it, I atleast make sure my Bi's are pumped. Negatives are the way to go on Concentration curls. I just did them today and I used the 130's for negatives. I would go higher but my joints and tendons have been bothering me.

You need to triple your NOX dosage, that'll help you get the pump, now do negatives on the preacher curl with at least 400lbs, remember you only need the top 1/25th of the ROM the rest is wasted effort, make sure you have someone there to help you lift the weight back up and to scream 'it's all you dude' as loud as possible.
