loma-linares was a very competitive fight...tough fight for both sides. seemed to me, linares was on his way to a pretty convincing win...i had linares about two rounds ahead, plus the two points for the kd...credit to lomachenko, he came back and stopped linares. i have to admit, i didn't see that coming...linares looked like he was holding up well and only getting better as the fight progressed...the ko sure as hell surprised me, because i was actually thinking that it was linares setting loma up for the ko...
but that's boxing...things can change on a dime. the bigger question is, what does this fight say about lomachenko? well, i think it shows that against a young, strong, active fighter (not rigo), lomachenko is in for a very tough fight...we saw this against grj where the fight was even up to the 8th round before loma pulled away down the stretch...tonight, it was linares ahead and suddenly succumbing to a body shot that came out of nowhere. however, although the grj and linares wins are good on lomachenko's record, the fact is, the competitive nature of both fights, only show that lomachenko is a top fighter...neither grj nor linares were on anybody's top 10 pfp at the time...i think that shows that maybe loma belongs in top 10 pfp contention, but at the lower end of the spectrum...i'd say maybe #8-10.
after tonights fight particularly, there is NO argument for lomachenko being anywhere CLOSE to #1 pfp, especially when there's guys like crawford, thurman, mikey and spence out there that are far, far more deserving.
