I think the UFC could pull off an open weight tournament over a weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and the championship fight on Monday. It would be a 16 man tournament and instead of having all the fights in one night have them over a 4 day period.

I think the commission might pass that, cuz one nighters are to dangerous to pass now days. I think that have the tournament over a 4 day period would be more brutal than having it in one night cuz your adrenaline would be running all night so it would block out some of the pain and stuff like that. Over a 4day period you'll have some down time and the pain will kick it so you'll be really sore before all your fights.

I wish they would do an open weight tournament. Like middle weight thought heavy weight, or feather weight through welterweight. There's some potential for some great fights I would love to see an open weight tournament. If we can't get it passed in the united states, let's go do it in japan cus obviously they'll pass it.

Although, I've heard similar thoughts, and agree that they would be interesting... I don't think we will see anything like this in the next 3-5 years.. Maybe when interest or ppv sales dissipates..

I don't get why people like things like this.

I'm more interested in who's the best when they are at 100%, not who's the best after several grueling fights with no proper time to heal.

Would be a BEAUTIFUL thing to watch and the ONLY way to get it done in the U.S. would be on an Indian Reservation Casino (like Shine Fights 3 LW Grand Prix back on 09/10/2010). I'd be up for it. Would need a TON of alternates ready on the "bench" in case of competitors not being able to continue for whatever medical reason.

Trying to come up with a witty response, but I don't have one. Posts like this just make me feel like an old man that feels the need to sit the little padawan down and explain to him that it just doesn't work that way. Instead, i'll just let it go.

tournaments is what MMA was built on, they need to bring this format back.

I don't like tournaments if its a 1 day type or even a 1 week deal. It's not fair if you have a Johnny Hendricks knockout and then another guy has an Erick Silva vs Fitch type fight.

You need weeks to recover from fights. It wouldn't be about who is the best fighter, it would just be about which fighter is 100% at that given moment.

No. Thats how fighters get seriously hurt. These are people, not robots. There are good reasons why no athletic commission in the US will sanction them.

Bro...this is Sherdog, where logic is promptly disregarded as inconvenient.

C'mon man! :wink::icon_lol::p:eek::):rolleyes::cool:

Neither OW nor a 3 day tournament would ever be licensed at that level.
As awesome as it would be, those days are over. (at least in the UFC)

yea well people that have never really competed don't seem to get that lol

Tournaments are a bad idea, and are not very logical. Look at what happens in TUF, and that's over a long period of time. Guys will just lay and pray, trying to get in to the finals unscathed.

This is new and exciting

Sunday? Hopefully it isn't during football season

Monday night fight? Uhhh no.

Man I loved that game in your AV as kid. Karate Champ was the real deal.

Love the old tournaments, but it's something of the past, best enjoyed on old vids. It wouldn't even make sense now, and couldn't happen with how far the sport has come.

Yeah this exactly, as awesome as it would be it just ain't going to happen. Maybe in somewhere like Japan though, who knows?

They will goddam do whatever Dana tells them to do! If Dana tells Anderson to beat up the entire roster in one night, he will do it. :icon_twis
