I used to give often because of my upbringing, but after some experiences I've stopped.

I lived in Philadelphia for a while (near the Universities). If anyone's ever been there it is beggars-galore! Holy sh*t.

People come up to you and they recycle the same stories over and over again. If you politely say you don't have one, their warm demeanor goes out the window and they'll wordlessly walk away or if you give them a meager amount, they look at you like you're an idiot. One guy cursed out my wife when he didn't get what he wanted. :-/

This 7-11 by Drexel University (probably the busiest Sevs anywhere) has guys who stand outside and beg students for change as they go in and out, idunno if they have some kinda deal with the store and the police who never seem to bother them, but they must be raking in some dough if even 1/10th of the students give them change. There are a lot of young, white, hipster kids there who panhandle too, not to judge just find it a bit obscure.

A lot of these folks just seem naggy and entitled. Hell, at least some those folks who beg in NYC subways do tricks (as intrusive as they are) and performances, or lie about a fundraiser for their basketball team to actually earn the cash, not make up bullshit backstories... It makes it hard to feel compassion when there is so much dishonesty.

I was at wal mart looking at some automotive stuff and kind of explaining it over to my girlfriend because she was curious how something car related worked.

Then some guy comes over to me and was like hey man that's really interesting stuff, can I ask you a question? I'm like yeah, what's up? (expecting him to ask a question about cars)

He reeks of cigarettes and holds up an inner tube for a bike and was like "Can you buy this for me? My tire went flat". I'm like you should have bought that tube instead of buying a pack of cigarettes and he said fuck off and walked away.

I don't give these people shit and 99% of them don't deserve it.

I would've probably laughed at that... dude was bold as hell!

Yep. Whoopity doo you brought me my meal, "please sir can I have two dollars". No you can't, just bring me my bill.

Fuck all of them. Let them starve, OD, or wtv.

I would never give money to a beggar anyway. Maybe some food if they asked, but they never ask for food.

yes i gives when the mood strikes.

I used to. But now I do what my brother does whenever one approaches me, just keep moving and cut them off mid-sentence with “sorry”.

I usually stick my hand out in front of me tell them to kick rocks before they even get within 5 feet. I saw a group of 4 women just the other day hanging out with a sign. A mother and 4 daughters it looked like, and they were standing right in the middle of a shopping center. Strip malls, outlet stores, resturants, at least 25+ places these bums could have walked into and asked about employement.

I consider myself a charitable guy, i help those in need, I give strangers rides, and i believe social welfare programs help keep the US from turning into a 3rd world shithole.

That being said, when you are standing around begging for change when there are almost unlimited places that will pay you to basically stand around and do nothing, I'm not giving you shit.

Aren't you the same guy who started a thread whining about servers who didn't write down your super complicated orders?

And now you're saying you don't even tip them..

You must be a real pain to be around with.

Many times I do not.

Last time I did was too a Black Church Group in Houston.

It was at an intersection by Gunspoint Mall. All these dudes where like this:

Their Pitch was, we're here to help black people in this Country not in Africa.

They were so throw back looking, I regretted not having some 70s funk playin on my radio.

I gave'em $5 and they said, Right On Honky!

I showed'em the fist and drove on.

I think I made a difference.

With beggars my feelings are conflicted between empathy and apathy.
I have a naturally empathetic reaction to help anyone in need that I can. I know what it's like to make great money, and I know what it's like to be broke as hell.
On the flip side, anyone giving to an able bodied beggar is really just an enabler.

I'm from NYC.

Giving to the poor is discouraged from the getgo

I believe that was @Clippy

When I was in high school, a dude in his early-mid 20s came up to me on the street telling me how hungry he was and was hoping to give him some coins. This was before I started working part-time, so I was on allowance, but I still gave him $2, felt like I was doing the right thing. I forgot how long later, maybe hour or 90 minutes later, I saw him in an internet cafe shop smiling with his friend playing on computer. I pretty much stopped giving panhandler money after that. Now, my approach is, if a panhandler came up to me, I will tell them I'd walk with them to the nearest place that sells food and buy it with them.
