I don't personally like any fast loss programs or interval training.
I think the trick is, at least for me, is to create a low stress environment and training program. It is really hard to reduce the stress of cutting calories and attacking your body with crazy workouts makes it harder.
For me, the trick has been low intensity cardio, consistent weight training, a modest calorie deficit and lots of sleep. High volume foods are a help as well. I get a good amount of healthy fat and I think it helps.
On the calories thing: if I burn 2200 without working out, and I want a 20% calorie deficit, I eat 1760.
If I burn 500 calories working out, and I want to keep a 20% deficit, I eat 2160.
2200-1760=440
2700-2160=540
So for working out a lot and eating to fuel it some, I only burn another 100 calories.
However, all that working out can create a lot of stress on your already taxed system and make sticking to the diet much harder.
So I think that the diet should have workouts that facilitate it without creating a stressful environment. That's weight training several days a week without a cardio element to build a little strength and protect your muscle mass, very SHORT duration interval training for the health benefit and low intensity cardio that doesn't require much sugar to fuel, because you won't have it to give.
I recently worked my ass off to lose about 30 pounds in 2 months, and I was miserable, and I plateaued hard for 2-3 months. I'm back on the diet and losing again, but I had to work to maintain until my metabolism caught back up and my body calmed down. I'm hoping / expecting that my new low stress process will let me cut the next 25 over a longer period of time without so much suffering.
