This is a long read but I just need to get this out:

I had my first am kickboxing fight a few hours ago. Hell it was the first time I even stepped foot in a ring.

I trained hard. I thought no one could stop me. I was wrong. I did learn. I will rise and I will continue to compete and fight.

The day before I had a 12 mile hike, but I use that as no excuse. Honestly even up until the sound of the bell I believed tonight was my night. I weighed in at 144 and was competing at welterweight (140-147). The warm up went okay I entered the ring touched gloves and whacked him with a rear left high kick that had the crowd making some noise. That was the second to last strike worth anything that I landed. For the rest of the round he pretty much out struck me using his reach. Its not even that I just felt like I couldn

Congrats on even stepping up and getting in the ring. I dono if I ever will even at the amateur level. Good to see that your able to take things out of it and learn from what happened.

Well, stepping into the ring for full contact striking of any sort puts you in an elite club anyway, don't forget that.

You had some pretty crappy circumstance to deal with, and before you guys pounce on him about the hike the day before, read his thread in the conditioning forum. He was in a tough spot, and had to make a tough call. He manned up and did what he had to do.

Losing sucks, and I'm one of those guys who is hard on himself about these things...but I imagine you'll get your head in order and want to get back to training/fighting ASAP.

Thank you - I am going to take a week of from training just to let my head rest - I plan on keeping up my roadwork and BW conditioning during this week. Something I didn't want to tell you guys nor my coach is that I had a concusion that didn't clear up until 2 days before the fight. Thats how bad I wanted to fight.

An interesting tad bit is that the REF during the rules meeting highlighted Anderson Silvas stop kick and told us he would through us out of the ring for that.

The founder of the UFC was also at the event.

Wichever mod is in control of the AM Fighter Tag let me know and I will contact you with my personal/event info.

Shit happens man. Freezing and not listening in your first fight is natural from what I read around here all of the time. It just takes practice and you will more than likely perform 200% better your second fight than you did your first. And probably another 200% better your 5th than you do your 3rd. Live and learn.

My dad always told me if someone says they never lost a fight they are either full of shit or they aint been fighting anyone tough enough.

Your first fight doesn't mean shit. I watched two of my best sparring partners look like shit in their first MT fights to guys they should have knocked out in the first round. The nerves got to them and they both dropped decisions. I'll tell you the same thing I told them: even Anderson Silva lost his first professional fight, and to a welterweight. Amateur losses don't mean shit, and you're only going to get better every time you step in the ring you're only going to get better.

ridiculous. try poetry. i dont even wanna start flaming on you... you are just being ridiculous.

but yeah i guess you can write this journal entry and we'll all give you our sympathy. you dont have mine though.

Whats your record?

How tall are you?
Did you give away a lot of reach.
And good luck for next time.

why am I thinking Rickson?...lol

That was a deep post. I understand why your upset. I'm training to fight in Muay Thai and if I lost that first fight I would be disheartened.
You have a few reasons to be happy though. Both people paid you great compliments. Take this fight and use it in your training to work harder and longer. If your this dedicated I'm sure you will have many more wins heading your way.

I had a similar experience except it was sparring someone who was a lot better than me. Really disheartened me, but at least its a learning experience.

You'll bounce back dude :)

And at least you entered a fight! I don't think I would (mostly because my day job requires a lot of brain power that I don't really want to lose).

5'7.

Never asked for yours, or anyone elses

Just sharing an exp. with people whom I know can understand. This is not a sob story. Sympathy helps me none from myself or from anyone else. This is Just my exp as honest as I can give it.

The other guy was 6"1 and weight in was 147? Damn that is one skinny dude.

Fighting a rangy southpaw in your first ever bout?

Not a recipe for success.

f*ck yeah!

mate 5'7 fighting 6"1 is a lot of height/reach to give away.
Did he keep nullifying your attacks with his long-ass jabs?

Damn lanky bastards lol.

Haha my thoughts exactly. Don't worry dude, everyone loses/has lost a fight at some point. As long as you actually learned, then you didn't lose as much as you think.

ouch brother.. I feel you.. but mad props for stepping in the ring and mixing it up..

You'd be surprised at how many people won't do that... no matter if they're really good in the gym... as soon as they get hit... they fold... you didn't fold and fought back as best as you could... you know what that makes you...? A fighter.. doesn't matter if you lost or won... your still a true fighter
and people like us are a rare breed. So keep your head up and keep fighting....

I think you are correct about dropping down a weight class... I am 6' and I fight at welterweight... I walk around 155-160... if I fight in MMA it'll be in the featherweight division...

its like whats happening in the UFC welterweight division now... monster guys like Anthony Johnson are coming in.... 6'2" and shredded...the days of the muscular stocky short guys are coming to an end, guys like Matt Serra.... more and more you'll see taller guys with big reach moving into each division

I have the same body type as him so that why I can do it... broad shoulders and tiny waist.. good genetics I guess...

Good luck to you in the future... and post the fight vid! We'll give you some good feedback on what you could work on for your next fight.

Best,

Kokoro

hey bro keep your head up, you are only amateur. This is the time to make mistakes and to learn from them. When you go pro none of this is going to matter. Yes it hurts like hell to lose but it makes the will to win that much stronger believe me I know I fight amateur mma at 145pds my record is 3-2-0. I have my first kickboxing fight coming up June 6. Am I nervous hell yeh, but my will to live and win will overcome it all. Keep your head up train hard and go back and smash that dude:)

Hey man. You have an excellent outlook on things. It's good to hear some optimism from someone on here. And it's definitely carried over in the comments.

Keep it going. Keep training. But mostly, hang on to your outlook. That'll push you the farthest.

Just be glad you weren't this guy: Fastest MMA Knockout

holysh*t that KO was fast as hell I wonder how fast that was like 2-3 seconds?
