As a Shogun fan I am not liking the tone of his comments. I think defeating your opponent should always be your top priority. Sounds complacent-not good. What do you guys think of this and the possible cut to 185?

We'll see. Maybe Shogun is too content, still gonna root for him.

I thought Shogun was done a loooong time ago.

He needs to retire right fucking now.

Not putting him down, great warrior but combat sports is not something you hang onto when your body gives up on you.

i read the article that has that quote. i dunno. seems like a mis-translation. maybe he meant he has no pressure to win just to go out there and perform his best/try.

"He’s an aggressive fighter and I know it will be tough, Rua continued. I like this fight because of his style. I don’t think of this fight as definitive for my career. I have no obligation to win, only to do my best."

“This fight is going to be difficult, the guy is good in boxing, and I will have to fight my best to leave the cage as the winner. My focus only is training and evolving. As long as my body is good, I will be fighting."

The entire quote sounds very roughly translated by mmaweekly.

I like your optimism but like another poster said, I think his body is shot. And it seems like he lacks the year round conditioning and diet regimes needed to compete with the best of his division. That said I hope Shogun gets a KO finish.

No offense to Shogun, but he either needs to retire or seriously fix things up. Training with your friends in your garage and have them say "Vai Shogun!" just doesn't cut it.

As Ninja said, Shogun is surrounded by tools and yes men, that's his biggest problem, more so than the bad knees.

Could be lost in translation. Might mean that whether he wins or not is ultimatley not up to him alone

He's responding to the psychology of putting too much pressure on himself and then having to deal with the disappointment of defeat.
I think some of you are misinterpreting him.

Did you ever see that Far Side comic, the old person bus?
An older guy is stepping on to the street and there is a bus directly headed in his path, and he gets hit. Then another old guy comes over and says, "you too?"
And the caption reads, "you never see it coming."

It's probably the reason why he doesn't train hard anymore. He's not gonna get ahead with this attitude. If that's the way your mentality is, you're not gonna run the extra mile, you're gonna lift the extra reps etc.

I really think the game just past him by I believe the shogun today could beat 2006 shogun he's a great example of a sport evolving
And he simply hasn't done enough to evolve

Go f()& your self .... All the retire now talk, why dont you retire from sherdog with your negative comments and follow nfl or baseball you pnuts, not many names draw a dime from the old school fans ! Arghhhhh

Shogun is a legand, i dono how you can call yourself an mma fan and not like to watch him.... Go back to watching wwf or whatever its called these days where the guy who talks the best actually matters

Oh shut up

I think he was just responding to the backlash after losing to Sonnen, as in "I fight for myself, I have no obligation towards other people"
