I was on my way to join the Marine Corps, just turned 27 last month but have decided against it.

They were really pushing infantry and food services and its not like I had a bunch of options considering I didnt score very high on my asvab, I am not dumb by any means, I just have not been in school for a while and math was always bad for me.

So I thought about what I wanted from the military; discipline, world travel/adventure, the honor of serving, learning a trade, pay and benefits.

Discipline you can get from a variety of places, hell we are on an mma forum, you could join a boxing or mma gym and learn to embrace the grind.

World travel would be nice and im sure you can have adventure but you will also go to places where you might not want to be and you will working all the time anyway.

As for the honor of serving, yea you would get a big honor from serving in such a close circle like the Marine Corps, a lot of pride but at what price? Every infantryman in my family while very prideful has some deep scars from things they have seen or had to do, if I did join as an infantryman I personally would view myself as a gun for hire, Im sorry if I offend anyone but that is how I view it, the military has done some great things and has great people but they also have some a holes in charge and some very bad things have to be done, I dunno if I would want to blindly follow orders and have to live with doing something horrible that keeps me up at night.

The pay is not that good starting, sure you earn more rank and what not you get more but in four years I could also learn a trade or two out here.

Im not totally ruling out the possibility but I feel like I would look into the Coast Guard, my main issue is having to blindly follow orders even if its something bad, Im not a big fan of giving up all my power to someone and have to listen to every single thing they say with no say or choice.

I feel like it would have been a better fit for me when I was 20 as I was a knuckle head but right now im not so sure.

If it came down to 'blindly following orders' being the deciding factor on whether the military is or is not for you, it was never going to be a good fit. I have not seen him in a while but Mike still might be on here.

at your age it wouldn't be a good look tbh. Many NCO's around your age would view you as sitting out the wars and only enlisting now for the benefits.

You toot your own horn 'I am not dumb by any means' and fittingly your name is Rockman. Just saying.
latest

My favorite game as a kid, even if it was the other "rock" you speak of how is that a sign of intelligence?

Pretty dumb post.

Good. I would never want to die for some Chicken Hawk War Mongering politicians and their pointless wars anyways. Its all BS, if you still join the Military.

Good on you. Cause with the current Rules of Engagement which your American soldiers have to follow, your decision will avoid you from suiciding.
If Hillary wins the bullshit will continue , but im not sure if Trump would/will change them either.

Sounds like you weighed the pros and cons for you personally and made the right decision.

I think you and @mikearmyquitte would get on just fiiiiine

This OP actually sounds sane and thought it through.if I remember correctly mikearmyquitte came off as pretty unbalanced and joined without thinking it through

Why not try another branch? You did good telling the recruiter to fuck off because peacetime infantry sucks balls and food service is...well, food service.

At your age you'd have to deal with people younger than you giving you orders because they out rank you. Some people have issues with that.

Not just his DIs either, he'd be taking orders from Lance Coconuts who can't even legally drink yet.

If he's at a point in life where he's considering enlisting at 27, he's probably going to be taking direction from younger people no matter where he works at this point.

Take it from someone that served 4 years in an Infantry Unit in the Marine Corps, the Corps isn't for you. Most Marines in my unit were gung-ho, followed orders and did whatever it took to accomplish the mission. I doubt that you would make it through boot camp at Parris Island. It's a lot of mind games and based on your comments, I just don't see you making it.

Join the Army National Guard or Reserves to see if you have what it takes for the military. Good luck.

The military isn't for everyone at least you're honest with yourself. Some people are not honest with themselves, join, waste everybodies time, then get chaptered out.

But one thing, please don't compare the discipline it takes to train in mma to the discipline it takes to be in the military. Nowhere close.

You sound like a pussy... DON'T join the Marine Corps, you won't do well with those kinds of preconceived notions.

I'm sure there are loads of career path out there for you, best of luck

Just join the air force.
