I've been getting into whiskey lately, mostly scotch, and learning to appreciate it.

Someone gave me a huge bottle of black velvet, which I'd never tasted, but I've seen it on the bottom shelf for dirt cheap before.

I think cheap whiskey is great to have on hand for mixing but when you want to drink something straight you need the good stuff.

Well I ran out of scotch and wanted something straight so I tried the black velvet on the rocks and it was fantastic. I think I prefer it to many other more expensive brands of whiskey.

My friend tried some with me and hated it. He could totally tell why it's so cheap, but I can't. It tastes delicious to me.

Am I just an unsophisticated chump akin to a small child that prefers hot dogs over ribeye steak?

Its smooth comparatively speaking. Bottom shelf ftw.

I've had a 80 dollar shot. And a 4.75 shot. You know what? They both get you drunk. And honestly none of them taste much different.

Never tried Black Velvet. But I’d recommend mid-range stuff for mixing. No point in ruining a good cocktail with bottom-shelf spirits.

Pro tip for alcohol consumption.

it is an acquired taste in pretty much every category. So if the taste you 'acquire' is for cheap stuff you will LIKE the cheap stuff and there is nothing wrong with that.

If you keep pushing into more expensive stuff with more complex notes and flavours you will likely acquire that taste and there and lose much of your prior, and there is nothing wrong with that either.

If you only drink bud and coors light, you will like watery beers, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you move into dark beers and wheat beers, etc you will likely lose some or all of your appreciation for watery beers and there is nothing wrong with that.

So be a liquor snob or don't. Either is ok. Just don't apologize for your choice.

Hey.. Don't bring reality into a situation where idiot humans have something they get to pretend makes them high class. Humans creating rank through comically fake means like monkeys with the longest grass sticking out of their ear is serious business on this planet. Sure, when aliens come or AI takes over they will look at 80% of what we do to pretend things about rank, intelligence, and status, and go:
<{walkerwhut}>

But these idiot things like which nail polish tasting hard alcohol makes you a big shot while killing your brain cells really matter.

You should watch the Whiskey Tribe on YouTube
Semi comical Whiskey Reviews and their motto is
The best way to drink Whiskey is what you like to drink the way you like to drink it.

That's funny.

My ex's dad loves Black Velvet.

Only thing he'll drink besides beer.

Never met anyone else who drank the stuff.

Hat's off, my dude.

Yeah, when it comes to cheap whiskey the Canadians have everyone else beat, and theres a reason for that. They are nit as strict on their whiskey laws as most other countries. They are allowed to add a certain amount natural flavor to their w hiskey and still cqll it straight whiskey. Thats why i call Canadian whiskey "cheat whiskey" cuz they cheat a little bit. It does make for a smoother bottom shelf whiskey than a comparab le priced bourbon.

Check out Rich & Rare too. Its poor mans crown royal.

Rich and rare got us pulled over and my buddy taken away in cuffs when we were teenagers. Making a denny's run at 3 in the morning turned out not to be the best idea lol

Got a friend who drinks Coors Light and thinks theres nothing wrong with that.
There is something wrong with that when there is better beer.
And he's not doing it for acquired taste. Hes doing it because he thinks hes suppose to and is a cunt

I grew up with that always being a chick whiskey, all the girls drank it. I suggest you pour doubles until you come to realize “who cares what anyone else thinks?”

haha.

I have had numerous friends over the years who live in that 'water' beer category (Coors, Bud, Corona, etc) . I love to tease them about it citing that what they like about beer is beers that taste the least like beer. The category that goes out of its way purposely to try and minimize every beer flavour and try to get the beer as neutral and close to fizzy water taste as they can. That is true BTW, and not just a dig.

But I am just busting their balls, as there is nothing wrong with liking that category best, and not really like 'beer flavours' even in a beer. Taste is subjective and if a guy says RomCom's are his favorite movie segment there is nothing wrong with him liking that either.

There is likely a big crossover in these groups tbh.

Drinking all that liquor
Will only make you sicker.

Whiskey, gin, and rye
Will make your mother cry.

entirely my opinion but ....to me all alcohol tastes like trash....there are moments where its taste is lost in the desire for the effect but I would never be grabbing an alcoholic drink if my desire was to have something tasty on my tongue.....its a trade off ...poison for pleasure .....as I get older my desire for that pleasure is drastically fading

Edit: Crown Royal, FTW

good enough for the king.....good enough for the peasants...

Price factors in as well. When I used to drink alot I drank a ton of bud light. Not because it was my favorite beer but because it was my favorite relatively cheap beer. I couldn't drink natty light all the time but bud was fine although I like others more.
