I don't understand how 5x5 and starting strength works

this has been asked quite a few times already, try searching

read the FAQ for your own sake...

your body is one unit...so you work it as a unit using the biggest exercises which recruit majority of muscles in various movement patterns. You'll make more gains doing high intensity workouts with those 5 exercises then you'll ever make doing 10000 various exercises targetting inidividual muscles...

why don't you actually try it first? It's harder than you think.

Who's gimick account is this?

you've got two choices here
1. be a man do the program become a f*cking animal
2. keep up with the half ass GPP and body building split and be like every other fratastic queer who talks about starting MMA in their pink polos, white hats, and boat shoes

For the sake of your Y chromozone I'd pick option 1 and follow, besides how could you possibly know more than Mark Ripptoe? Listen to the man.

I looked at Bill Star's 5x5 routine and Rippetoes starting strength, and I don't understand.

Are you really only supposed to do 4 or 5 exercises? Right now I do a 3 day split (back/biceps, chest/triceps, legs/shoulders) and some overall strength stuff like chuck liddell does like hitting a stump with an axe as hard as I can for a while, but I am interested in starting rippetoes starting strength.

Can anyone explain to me how it works and if you're only supposed to do deadlifts, squats, military press, cleans, bench press, and dips?

I don't think it's possible to get jakt fibras without bicept curlz. That Rippletoad guy is full of it.

If you want a physiological explanation, it's quite simple (well not really, but I can do my best). Your body reacts (in terms of muscle growth) to two factors, the amount of weight or force applied, and the duration for which it is applied. Heavy weight causes strength gains, long duration causes muscular endurance gains. You want strength, so you'll be doing few reps and exercises to maximize the amount of weight you can move, and doing things like squats that inherently allow you to move heavy things.

Trust me, it works. I started on the 5x5 two weeks ago, and I've had far, far bigger gains than I ever saw on a bodybuilding-style program. I'm still puny, but gaining.

If you look at the lifts used in the 5x5 they cover all of the major muscle groups. If you are looking to increase your strength there's no need to do a tonne of different exercises. A few simple ones with heavy weights will do the trick.

Rippletoad sounds like it's from BattleToads.

I like it.

I get 90% of my gains from doing 3 basic exercises 2 times a week.
Only 15 working sets.
Isn't that insanenly easy and lazy?!
Just try it....

Yeah on paper it might look easy only doing 15 set in total. Wait till you actually try the dam thing. You end up with a love/hate relationship with deadlifts and squats. Love the gains hate the dam pain and soreness.
