I think they wanted to strip him and it was a mutual decision to announce it as a "retirement" to save face. This was the MMA version of "stepped down" in the executive world... you did something sketchy, everyone knows you did something sketchy, but for some corrupt reason no one will be allowed to openly acknowledge it

We will see when more information comes out, but it's probably more along the lines of the Jones has wanted to retire, like he said he told the UFC a long time ago, and they finally just accepted it.

Like when Khabib retired, they kept trying to get him to come back, and eventually it stuck.

With that said, I had faith that they were going to make the Aspinall vs Jones fight happens and was occurring by years end, I believe Jones is done and retired, if he does come back it won’t be at HW it’ll probably just some fight that can sell. Jones is the last of his generation that was/is still fighting at the top of a division.
