Square footage of the basement is 864 sq feet. Width is 2/3 of the length. What is the width of the basement.
w = 2/3 L. A = L w = L (2/3 L) = 2/3 L^2. L = (3/2 A)^(1/2) L = (3/2 864 sq ft)^(1/2) = 36 feet w = 2/3 36 feet = 24 feet.
Yeah, math is the only subject I struggled with when I was in college. But after figuring it out, it was pretty fun. Mathematics takes time to get a hang of.
NICE! See I don't quite get what the ^ does. I know it's "to the power of" or something but it doesn't make sense to me. I even took math in college and did very complex equations. Now I don't even know how to multiply fractions and stuff. I got dumber The only equation I could come up with was L x (2/3xL) = 864
No worries, I am in the same position, having not needed it in almost 20 years..it's understandable. Add to that the fucked up way that they teach math anymore? What's the point of refreshing that skill?
Not really - After trying and trying I got 54 for L and 36 for W - I can't believe how dumb I feel over this...heh.
That's true, but most of it is done invavrvually once you learn it. I never think..."Go go gadget algebra!".
