Great video on fusion energy production.
Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue(would) solved this like 15 years ago I thought.
Come stand next to me Science.
So these magnets are super strong? Is it like the machine from Suicide Squad? If so, how will they prevent my car from being dragged to its demise?
You see these breakthroughs all the time. On a daily basis. Then you never hear from them ever again.
Its remarkably good news as it's a huge step towards the golden egg of legit clean energy that doesn't rely on 'green' sources that are hit or miss depending on the weather. There are still some major hurdles to cross however, as others in the thread have pointed out.
I don't usually follow most claimed breakthroughs especially with quantum computing an mapping the brain because most of it is only going to be significant decades from now. This really seems like a major advancement in material engineering for high energy physics. Not pie in the sky decades away science.
But, will it blend?
Knowing humanity I bet they'll develop portable rail guns before any useful fusion takes place.
Still, nice post!
I've been screaming about this. Conservative estimates have us with commercially viable fusion by 2030. That is 10 years from now.
This could happen in the next 5 years.
For a minute I thought the title said Huge breakthrough in producing manlets
So these super magnets are going to destroy the earth polarity and flip us into the next ice age.
Thanks @PEB I appreciate your updates in the world of fusion research.
I remember learning about Tokamak and ITER from your posts and I'm curious if you've come across a private firm called TAE in your research?
Also how does the strength of the new magnets compare to the best available prior to this new breakthrough?
Holy shit I just have zero interest in that. Thanks to whoever though for the results.
There was one in popular science where they were going to use plasma to dispose of garbage and take it down to its component elements. Supposedly it would create more energy than it used (not counting the garbage) and solve our garbage problem.
Then you hear nothing about it after that.
People made fun of them but most people have absolutely no conception of how magnets work. Even people who can give the wikipedia definition and stuff probably don’t have the mental picture, so to speak, of the mechanisms at work.
Insane clown posse makes a wholesome song about the power of wonder and being mystified and they got shit on by people who think they’re intelligent because they have a subscription to pop-science youtubers.
When in fact, asking yourself ‘how the fuck does this work’ and thinking about it is more important than clicking on wikipedia and copy pasting the explanation like a smug asshole.
