ARM cuts ties with Huawei, threatening future chip designs
A major blow to Huawei

Chip designer ARM has suspended business with Huawei, threatening the Chinese company’s ability to create its own chips. BBC News reports that ARM employees have been instructed to halt “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei due to the US trade ban.

Oh shit, this is the final death blow to Huawei's smartphone division if Beijing doesn't work out a deal ASAP with Washington to lift the ban.

Every modern SoC for smartphones in the world are based on ARM's latest designs, be it Apple's Bionic, Qualcomm's Snapdragon, Samsung's Exynos, Huawei's Kirin, or MediaTek's Helio.

The Wi-Fi Alliance is a consortium of companies — including Apple, Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Intel, as well as many others — who influence the development of new wireless technologies. Although Huawei’s temporary loss of membership doesn’t mean the company can’t create Wi-Fi products anymore, it does mean Huawei will no longer have an influence on where Wi-Fi technology is going.

US scared about China' s future independance in ICs. They may have bought some time or just sped the process with Hisilicon moving away from ARM.

HiSilicon moving away from ARM? Lol, could you possibly try to spin harder? You sound like a good soldier in the Wumao army.

Have no ideia but they do have money and China behind them. US is trying to cut their 2025 plan lets see what happens, more players is a good thing hope they achieve their goal.

The way Muricans are going after Chinese tech companies reminds me of Saudis going after US shale producers in 2015. You force them into a corner where they must develop alternatives instead of continuing their dependency on your products.

China's idea of developing a product is copying the technology that westerners came up with and creating a cheaper version. It's how Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi offer much cheaper prices; they rip off the tech from Apple and Samsung and spend 0 money in research. Don't worry about China competing by designing new products, they're almost constitutionally incapable of innovation. Huawei already has in-house knockoffs of almost every component of the hardware, but they're fucked when it comes down to Android and foreign software companies pulling the plug on them. Huawei consumers would have to contend with their phone not having access to basically any of the apps that they love. I think the company's toast.

That's what they said about Japan. China's graduating more STEM graduates per year than the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea combined right now. That's a viewpoint full of hubris.

Britain said the same things about Murica in the 19th century. Murica said the same things about Japan in the 1960’s. Japan was accusing South Korea of copying in the 1990’s. Fact of the matter is the Huawei has caught up with Samsung and Apple in the smartphone market, displacing the iPhone’s number 2 spot. It’s also the forerunner in the 5G race. Apple or Samsung would not be able to survive if Google, ARM, Qualcomm, Micron and Microsoft pulled the plug on them overnight either.

China produces the most STEM field graduate in the world and has the second largest R&D budget. It is also the world’s largest industrial power and consumer market. To say they cannot innovate is pure American arrogance thinking the world won’t go on without them. Your spot at the top is not perpetual. All powers rise and fall eventually. This isn’t about security as much as it’s about crushing a potential rival. If this was about spying, Murican tech companies already got exposed before. Trump openly said he’s gonna use Huawei as bargaining chip for trade talks. That kind of stunts does not promote faith in Murica’s leadership elsewhere in the world.

Renard is Canadian IIRC. A decent one.

Britain was supplanted by Germany, not Murica.

Even here in Canada, we got Murican toadies, aka the Conservative Party.

Murica surpassed Britain economically after early 19th century and militarily after WWI.

"Conservatives" in general are usually complete shitbags with no human decency and share core values with third world fundamentalist Muslims (see around half of this subforum). On the otherhand, it seems like your other options are hellbent on gender fucking you into a post-national existence. That's a difficult spot to be in but ultimately we're all space dust anyway, so whatever you know.

Yep, we get to pick between Harper lite, Weird Turban or King Cuck.
I'm talking about science and technology.
It's about the same timeframes as well.

...to what? o_O

Kirin 985 will come out in 2020, they could after that buy from MediaTek, who knows what China has brewing for the 2025 date.

MediaTek's entire line of Helio SoC is based on the latest ARM Cortex design - so is HiSilicon's entire Kirin line.

This is common knowledge, not some kind of industrial secret.

So basically your entire premise of "Huawei moving away from ARM" is base on...their continuing reliance on ARM? o_O

You sound like you have Apple stock, I meant in the short time, they have a soc almost finished and they could buy socs from Samsung and Mediatek untill they find a way out of ARM.
