First, let me start by saying I'm a Woodley fan. His fight persona and matches can be a little dry but I enjoy almost every interview I see him in.
All of that said, Woodley has strongly hinted and flat out said at times the reason he isn't respected or cheered is because he's a successful black man in a white sport.
Personally, I think this is ridiculous and I think he's too caught up in Twitter trolls and wanting to blame racism on why he's not loved. He's mentioned that MMA fans cheer guys like Conor who is a hooligan while boo guys like Woodley who is a nice guy.
Now that Woodley is fighting Colby Covington, he has an interesting dilemma. He's now a guy that most everyone is going to cheer against a brash white man. How is he going to rationalize this?
What is comes down to is not skin color but attitude. Woodley doesn't have the greatest charisma, exciting matches and has come across as whiney. That's why he's not liked. Fighting Colby though, he's going to be a fan favorite and hopefully he realizes it wasn't the skin color that was holding him down but the attitude.
