How to train avoiding punches?

I try to build up to longer, and longer strings of defense with more, and more advanced defensive methods. I try doing that by controlling the distance and slowly letting the guy get closer as I feel more comfortable. You don't want to get caught be cute with your defense, so to start I'm very serious, and try to let things build naturally over a few round... For example, if a guy tries to jump on me from the first bell I might clinch, but by round 3 I might let a guy throw a few shots for free before I try to land a counter.

I've never met a crazy theory I didn't like to entertain, intellectually at least.
