So I could not figure out why the UFC was pushing a Conor McGregor rematch against Nate Diaz. The fight did not make sense at all since the outcome is most likely gonna be Nate beating Conor with a full training camp.
Then I saw the announcement of Aldo vs Edgar 2 for the Interim Featherweight Belt and it just completely made sense for me.
Even if McGregor loses to Nate again, he's still champ. His worst match up at 145 is Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes. Since he already dispatched Mendes (albeit on 2 weeks notice) and Frankie is the No1 contender he'd have no choice but to face him at 145.
But Joe Silva and Dana White would not let their cash cow perish at 145, so they setup another match. Jose Aldo is an absolute nightmare match up for Frankie Edgar and he beat him once already.
So the obvious conclusion is that the UFC wants for Aldo to knock Edgar off the No1 contender position and they want McGregor to face Aldo again at 145lbs.
I knew Conor didn't want to face Frank, now the UFC has given us clear indication of Conor's mindset.
Flame away Conor nuggers
Edit. Thanks to fortheo for expanding the situation with Conor ducking Edgar.
2nd Edit.
Dominick Cruz has come out and expressed his opinion as well pretty much legitimizing my opinion on the matter. Here's his comments from BJPenn.com
“Conor’s going up to fight Diaz at 170[lbs] again, leaving the featherweight belt for Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar to fight for. Okay, what if Conor McGregor goes back down and fights Frankie Edgar at 145lbs?
“Which is an extremely terrible style match-up and a hard fight — and then he loses?”
“Now he’s lost all his push, whereas if he stays at 170, fights Diaz and he happens to lose again, he still has it because he’s like; ‘Well, but it was it 170′.
“So there’s still excuses to make for it, to say why he’s the best.
“If he loses to Frankie Edgar at 145, you pretty much kill the excuses. It doesn’t necessarily take away legitimacy but it buys time.”

The story goes back further than you make it seem. Flash back to ufc 189, Conor had the choice between Edgar, who said he was ready, or Mendes who was out hiking and playing touchbutt with hunters—Conor chose Mendes. After that, they decided to pin Conor's two biggest threats against eachother in hopes to kill Edgar off (if Mendes won that fight, Conor would have said "I already beat him) that fight was a hit on Edgar to kill him off. Now they're giving Edgar Aldo, which again is a hit on Edgar.
