I'm just trying to see if this terrible shit is some new tendency of this decade.
Who are the most reliable guys that have ever been around? How did big names like Liddell, Fedor, BJ, Hughes, Rutten, Old Shogun, Old Machida, Rampage, Couture, Mirko, Ortiz etc fared in regards to training smart and not getting injured back in the day

Some train smart, some train caveman stupid.

You can even go a lot more recent than that and find newer champs that defended multiple times back to back without injuries. Anderson and Jon Jones come to mind.

It's a small minority of champs and contenders that get injured leading up to these big fights.

Simply put, they are doing something wrong, somewhere.

But if you criticize them for improper training, expect to be lambasted here on Sherdog.

No one. Everyone gets hurt but not everyone admits it.

Mighty Mouse and Ronda defended their belts 3 times a year for the last few years. Inb4 "wmma / short people" naysayers.

Back then, Cain wasn't the one who was pulling out of his fights.

There is a lot of factors for someone pulling out.

One of them is that they are scared as fuck. RDA at least was. The other is that they don't get punished for pulling out of a fight.

For someone that experienced to break their foot that bad in the gym... its just crazy. If it was in sparring then he surely would have been wearing shin guards which also cover the foot. He must have been throwing full powered kicks or something!

Or he wasn't trying to land with the foot(generally not a good idea when kicking above the knee), and his sparring partner was moving back, or he misjudged the range, and when it got blocked with the knee tragedy struck.

It wouldn't take full power kicks so much as connecting with the foot when he meant to connect with the shin.

There are modern day guys who fight injured still as well.

I've trained under Edson Barboza for five years. He's fought about half his fights significantly injured. He has NEVER pulled out of a fight. Over half his fights are short notice or replacement. The UFC is well aware when he fights injured and they reward him, it's almost worth it tbh.

Yeah of course he wasnt trying to land with the foot. It takes a powerful kick to do that much damage if you are wearing shin pads- even if you hit an elbow or the top of the tibia. Unless it was cause from hitting an elbow during his pad rounds.

The stakes are much higher these days. You're really only seeing guys backing out of big title fights.
