I have approx. 4 months of vacation, want to know how much muscle mass I can gain with right diet and excersise.

The 20 rep squats say 20 lbs muscle in 2 months and I think 5x5 claimed 30-40 lbs of muslce in 4 months.

Is that even possible, or is it just bullshit?

depends what you've been doing prior to starting the 5x5 or other routine.

If you're a total newb you'll have to opportunity to gain much more than an intermediate or advanced lifter.

a lot of it depends on who you are and what you were doing before. mostly though, it depends on two things: food and your intensity. if you eat meger amounts and lift super hard, you will see more strength gains than "muscle". if you eat a shit ton, but mainly go through the motions of lifitng without giving it that much, you'll probably see more fat than muscle. if you eat like a little kid, and lift like one, (which is what many people end up doing) you'll get little results.

however, if you eat a lot of mostly clean food (veggies and meat at every meal, 5-6 times a day) and lift hard, you'll have the most potential to gain muscle and strength.

get on it.

Post of your goals and how you plan on achieving them. include what you think is a "good diet" and what you plan on doing for lifting. if you're cool about it, most people will be more than willing to help out and support you.

Ok here goes.

I am 18 years old and have always been interested in martial arts. I took karate when I was a child (mcdojo) and in highschool did hapkido.

Have been very interested in MMA recently and have been doing some bjj and wrestling, and going to start boxing soon.

I want to start competing eventually, training wise I am on the right track.

I know that getting big isn't too important, but right now I am too small to even fight in the lightweight division.

I am severly underweight, at 5'10 and 125 lbs. My goals are to gain muscle mass for martial arts, and strength as well. I am also looking to gain mass for aesthetic reasons, as I have Pectus Excavatum (inward dipping of chest) and I believe I will look better with bigger muscles. Plus people are always telling me I am too skinny. (which I am).

My current diet this past year (college) was usually no breakfast, maybe some milk or yogurt, a small lunch, as much as i could eat at dinner, and some milk and shit before bed. In other words, not much at all.

I know diet is very very important, I bought Scrawnytobrawny and have read a bunch of john berardi's material. Today I just picked up a bunch of good food from Whole Foods, no junk food or anything.

I am planning on eating six meals a day, lean meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, yogurt, oats, etc.
Supplementing a multivitamin, fish oil, and whey protein for PWO.

Excersise wise I have never lifted weights, just calisthenics for various sports/martial arts that I did in highschool. I am planning on doing the 5x5 or the 20 rep squat. I also have "Never Gymless" and am planning on incorporating some of the excesises for strength and conditioning.

without getting too complicated, if you wanna gain muscle, just eat til you puke and select a program and stick with it

Well, you have the knowledge, the will, and seemingly the desire to make use of that knowledge. Now it's up to you to do it. All that's left is consistency and intensity.

Get at it.

Join the "calling all pencil necks" challenge too. You'll get to know what others are doing and see how others are doing it.

Good luck.

Lifting 2x a week, using compound lifts, I gained about 10 pounds of muscle in 4 months.

How can you tell how many lbs is muscle and how much is fat? i get the underwater BF% test but not how you can tell about muscle.....

it's possible even w/o juice.
If you want to gain wieght, squat and deadlift. If you want bigger arms, squat and deadlift, if you want a bigger chest, squat and deadlift, if you want a bigger back squat and deadlift.

Take your body weight X it by 2.5 and that is the protein you should be eating in a day. Fish, red meat, eggs, milk, protein shakes and some more red meat. Then go squat and do some deadlifts.

Hit chest, back and arms and shoulders once/week too. Then go and squat and deadlift adn eat some more protein.

Sleep like 8-9 hours/day. That is when your body repairs and grows. Then go squat and deadlift. Good luck.

Body Mass Index. Most good gyms can do it for you. Water emersion only tells you what your body fat is.

Agree with your first post, but not this one.

BMI is worthless. Body fat % is much more important. If you know this then the rest of your body is muscle, organs, bones. Doc can probably tell you what the general breakdown is from there.

Without drug intervention... I highly doubt gains like that are realistic. I won't say it's impossible but it's highly improbable.

my advice is dont do it...big muscle gains can trigger injuries....because eventhough muscle gains can be made in short time in untrained subjects.....other tissues dont respond quite as well....

that is farily interesting, is there any general terminology associated with this type of development. How does strength occur while relative muscle augmentation is less apparent ?

There's miles of text on it. Start with the stickies.

well the nature of my inquiry was to know whether there is any specific terminology relating to this type of develpment. Otherwise I dont know what Im looking for.
