It’s a big if, but with all this talk of GSP looking small and fighting at LW, if he managed to capture the belt how big of a deal it would be?

I think it would be incredibly impressive, but GSP seems to appeal more to hardcore fans and French Canadians, which isn’t THAT big of a group. He’s a nice and humble guy AKA boring. Mainstream media always tends to cover the controversial big mouths, which is why Conor is so popular haha.

If he won a 3rd belt, the aliens would definitely take him then.

Huge in Canada.

Alot of casuals still don’t know him. But, if they watched 217. They know him now.

But, don’t forget. The man was the face of the UFC for many years. The reception he got from the fans in MSG, said it all. He was doing what Ronda, and Convict did. But, it was a different time, and much more demanding.

I don’t think he’d get big mainstream interest unless the UFC got their heads out of their asses, and made it so.

Who?

it wouldn't matter, only acting like a tough guy and pretending to be the biggest douche ever is what garners attention.

Either way, doesn't change that GSP is already one of the greatest fighters and champions the sport has ever seen. Another belt would only add to his legacy. The ones who have paid attention from the get-go know. Anyone who hasn't caught on by now will not. They're just sheep as is.

Do you really think GSP isnt mainstream already ?

Hes been in several mainstream tv talk shows and magazines..like forbes..and fitness magazines.. If he won a 3rd title he'd blow up all over again..why is everyone acting like GSP isnt GSP..or wasnt the biggest star for majority of his career

It'd be trending all over social media and make it to the front news of Yahoo and get talked about on ESPN and Fox Sports for sure. Would it be covered as massively and for as long as your average McGregor or Rousey happening? No, but those two are much bigger stars with the mainstream (and in McGregor's case, the PPV audience as well.)

He probably wouldn't get the mainstream recognition that he deserves unfortunately. Not to mention that if he's able to do it, it will be over the course of another fighting generation moving out and another taking its place. Hopefully at least the UFC will give to guy the recognition that he would deserve, he would arguably be the most successful fighter to fight under the UFC banner.
Say what you will but boxers only have a few pounds in variation to deal with, gaining or losing 30lbs to capture another title is pretty insane.

Not much because UFC belts don’t mean squat these days.

GSPs time has come and gone as a mainstream star.

He's not as exciting as he was during his initial run with the belt.

He'd have to have multiple dominating entertaining fights to even capture the mainstreams attention again.

That's not happening.

Anyone remember this? So cool! GSP was more popular outside of Canada than a lot of people want to admit, though this comment is not necessarily directed at the poster.

Spoiler Alert: The mainstream still doesn't give a shit about UFC. They are aware, but don't care.

Yeah but we're talking about 30 pounds difference between LW and MW. Have any boxers been champions in divisions 30 pounds apart?

Doesn't count if a HW put on 30 pounds

the public would only accept a three time intereim champion.

gsp is a big star and has been for a long time. Was the biggest draw for a long time and outside of Conor is still the biggest draw. Has major mainstream sponsors. Wtf is ts smoking?

Not sure what you're talking about.

GSP was the face of the UFC before Conor came along. A big chunk of his fans are from Canada but GSP was popular in many other countries. Did you see the video of him visiting the philippines?

But if you're talking as of 2018, it probably won't be as big of a deal. He might have lost a bit of popularity since his hiatus but he's still a huge name.
