How much is enough?..

Most people want to buy stuff they don’t need to impress people they don’t like. So it’s never enough. Survivalists turned to consumers. We are bombarded with ads, media etc etc telling us we aren’t enough, we need more, look what so and so has etc now more than ever. People over pay for a brand name even if it’s the exact same product because they want people to know they are “important”

So for most people its a security thing.

Personally if I was filthy rich youd never know it. Id have a simple home and a simple truck and Id dress even worse than I do now. Though I would have a nice boat.

True. But that guy scamming google was asking for it.

... if you didn’t want to sell it down to the very last gram, you could sell the 907kgs for 48-54 grand each and profit 40-50 mil. Lol

Simply living off of 2mil and not investing it somehow won’t work, you will run out eventually and be forced to go back to work.
who said I wouldnt invest it? I would have fun with like 200-300k and invest every other cent. I would live modestly other than enjoying a nice car and decently nice house and let the rest compound into a bigger sum.

You could be on to something with the security idea. I think it's Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs that includes security near the bottom. Leary's circuits of consciousness may have a similar idea too IIRC. And if you don't have that "feeling" or subconscious thought of feeling secure, you'll chase money/power etc. forever even if you do in fact have enough to be as secure as you realistically can be.

I live with around 65% of my salary. People spend much money on shit they dont need.

How much money if invested wisely could enable you to not have to work?

What does money get you? Peace of mind knowing you're not fucked destined to be another bum if your boss/co-workers are evil obnoxious assholes.

Everyone has a preference for how much shit they need. But I think much of our preference is influenced by how much others around us have. Research has shown that the neighbors of people who win the lottery are much more likely to go bankrupt than other people, all things being equal.

House, car, off-grid (solar/wind), grow food and herbs, Some money for vacations, special events, and emergencies.. Maybe a few toys for whatever hobby you have .

That is enough for anybody I don't care who you are. Beyond that point you are just working because you want to work.

At 2 million you could live beyond comfortably just off the interest.

Not looking for a dollar figure, that discussion just turns into a meaningless Ego driven thread..

I know many people Rich and Poor, but I am always amazed at the middle aged and older that still work 60+ hours a week chasing the almighty dollar..

I retired early...I live pretty simply, eat what I want, travel, a few cars....warm in the winter, cool in the summer..

Beyond that what does money really get you? More useless stuff you don’t need, and more pressure to maintain that stuff...

Good for you dude. I'm much the same, as long as we have a decent house, food, money for a bit of fun like travel or other experiences I'm good. Not into a lot of pocessions or flaunting.

Sounds like an awesome idea. Let me turn a 2 million dollar blessing into potentially life in federal prison or being murdered.

Greed is the downfall of so many people.

You guys hear about the dude that scammed google and apple out of something like 140million? Sending fake invoices to be paid to him. Dude could have fucked off at 20 million and lived like a King of Kings and never been caught. But he got so fucking greedy..

It's how the casinos make money. People don't quit when they're ahead. They want more. If they win, they keep gambling until they lose then chase the money they lost until they lose everything.

I smell a civil-service pension in the air.

That depends on what you do. I don't spend $1,000 a month. If you spend $25,000/ year, that $2 million will last 80 years.

Some people like working, some want to make money to leave to their families. What's really bizarre is people who are shocked to find out not everyone is a bum looking to do the bare minimum.

Yeh I know several people who have made it to retirement extremely comfortable and still live extremely modest lives, i can only imagine so they can leave more to their heirs.

One guy was a fort 500 executive, worth 5-10 million and his last car purchase was a used Chevy cruz that he bragged about chizzelling the price down.

Another guy with net worth of 1 point something, no debt, and fat pension goes to Wendy's daily for senior discount lunch...costs him like 1.80 a day lol.

Goal 1 Survive

Extra Goals Anything beyond that

What you can get you take, ain't no crystall ball to tell the future.

I’m 52 and retiring in 3 years. I will have dome 35 years in the airforce by then. I will be comfortable, play golf, ride my motorcycle, go fishing and travel. I don’t need more than taht.

You should read some Plato etc if this stuff interests you and you obviously have the free time

This... 100K a year (minus roughly 22k in taxes before any deductions) is still 78K a year, If you can't live a comfortable upper middle class life on 6500 a month, you are a failure.
