Private lessons and seminars included.

I am going to guess on average 2-3 thousand!

For bigger academies such as Gracie Torrance, valente Bros, renzo's

I would guess they probably make 50k plus a month profit.

What do you think?

How many students.
How much is the fees.
Then minus
The rent, water, electricity, salary of the instructor, any other expenses.
Then you get minus taxes and you get profit for the business.

On average? Far less than most people think.

I think some of the bigger ones make even more than that, but most don't even come close to that much money made.

there are too many variables to even get an average.

A slight aside, I heard recently (and this is regarding high street retail) that a good golden rule to have is to make sure salaries and rent don't exceed 35% of revenue, and that a lot of businesses fail when they over pay in salary (like a self-employed salary), or operate out of a premises that isn't cost effective for its purpose.

Presumably the other money is re-invested into the business for sustainability and growth.

I asked Jay Sculls this question, I don't know if he'll answer that for us.

That 25% rule would be hard to implement in high street retail IMO. But still interesting concept.

I wonder what is the break even for small bjj gyms that have around 60 students?

About twenty to cover rent water etc.

The rest will go straight into as income to instructor.

So multiply 40 by 160= 6400

I would imagine the big schools with make big money. Also need to keep in mind location. Rent is a lot more expensive in some cities than others, so it might look like they are charging a lot, much of it might be going back to just paying rent.

I think it's so inconsistent that it's hard to say...I've heard before that many school owners make a decent living, though don't necessarily become "wealthy" per se. Plus, many top competitors get sponsors to help in the cost of the gym, don't they? Does anybody know how that works? Do companies get a cut of the profit or do they get to market their products in the gym in exchange for paying part for the mats/equipment or perhaps the first few months of rent? I'm completely guessing here.

Depends on the sponsors but my guess is if they are big name competitors, they already will be cashing in with student attendance only.

I don't think instructors are closing half a mill in profit a year.

Maybe 50K gross,but definitely not 50K profit a month.
Those huge schools might have alot of students but have to pay Rent,Insurance,Instructors, and split with the people who financed the school in the first place.I talked with a VERY well known competitor and teacher and he said he only gets 1/3 of the BJJ program.I'd guess about 3K a month.

In some of the biggest schools, I'm sure the owner's personal salary is pretty damn impressive (Gracie Academy quickly comes to mind), but most I've met take home less than $2k/month from their gyms.

Depends...

How much you charge per student x how many students + private lessons=$
Deduct monthly rent, equipment, utilities, association fees if any, pay staff (if any), advertising (varies on how well you promote your business, and insurance.

Anything left over is yours.

But if you have a few affiliates, sell your own products and dvds, and have a succesful youtube page, you can make plenty. Lloyd irvin is probably on that 10k ceo/day because he marketed anything and everything about his bjj
