So my friend was listening to this song when I was over at his house.

I didn't log into my account, I didnt do anything at all....I never listened to this song in my house, ever.

So when I came home...guess what the top suggestion on youtube was? It was this song.

Keep in mind I wasnt even logged in to my account on my PC, this was straight up natural....I also didnt log in to my friends computer.

WTF? This is weird as fuck IMO

Do you have an android smart phone?

Yes I do.

samsung 8....Is this common?
They can listen through your phone. And this is no paranoid CT. I have personally witnessed multiple instances, of say, discussing that I need new shoes, for example, and then the next ad I see in my browser is for shoes. It's not a coincidence when it happens several times in a week involving disparate subjects (mostly shopping but not exclusively.)

It's fucking creepy as hell but I have no idea what to do about it. OK Google voice recognition is enabled by default; that's where you just say, OK Google, same as when you activate Siri by saying it, and the search via voice command pops up. But I think I turned it off on my phone and I still encounter this phenomenon.

Aye. There have been numerous instances where I'll be discussing something with friends, go to Google something, and it'll be the first suggested search.

Yup, I've double checked and I have all that Google assistant shit turned off and it still happens. Be careful what you say around your phone, I guess.

Yup, far too many testimonials from people for this to be mere happen stance. This is why I don't use google (I don't use duckduckgo either), as my either my browser, or my search engine. I've also seen it happen first hand where I search for something on youtube, and it immediately detects what I want, because I watched something related to it. That's convenient for sure, but scary too. Doesn't happen much anymore. Remember google is a product and there are lots of other products out there.

I like to show off and do it for friends. "Hey man, watch this shit...." and ask them to start typing in a generic search question, and what we were talking about pops up as the first suggestion.

I'm typically fine with it. I mean, drunken stoner talk isn't what the NSA is after. But talking about bombs, killing innocents, some political talk, etc. I can see being put on a more distinct watch list.

Mine just calls me a perv and gives me pages of pornhub links...

It's a gross invasion of privacy no matter what is being discussed. What if I were collaborating on writing a play or something and we were brainstorming ideas? Things could get crazy over totally innocent shit. That's why I'm not stepping one foot in the US until the patriot act (or whatever mutation follows) is gone. If you're not a citizen, you can be disappeared. No matter how incredibly unlikely that might be, there's not a fucking chance in hell I'm going to risk it. Who the fuck knows what I might have said that could be interpreted as something nefarious?

Agreed. I'd rather none of it be the case.

But it's a brave new world, unfortunately. Things aren't like what they used to be. Adapt or die, as they say.

Ok so I was in my phone while in friends house....Your telling me, that some how they know the computer in front of me, which in no way is connected to my phone, somehow got the info from my phone so that song will be suggested?

I noticed weird coincidence like this before...but this time, it stood out.

Fuck. I thought I was being paranoid.

I've even typed things up in email and suddenly I'm getting bombarded by similar ads.

Well, I can see your phone being linked to your computer. Do your notifications link up between the two? Your phone is always listening, regardless. So what your phone picked up on, your later Youtube/Google searches could pull up the same on the computer, theoretically.

I have absolutely had conversations about things that I've never looked up in my life and all of the sudden I have advertisements about them or had my search suggestions reflect the things I discussed. Just a reminder that someone is always listening.

I know it sounds very foil that-ish but it's happened to me dozens of times now.

If you sign into Google, in your browser, let's say, you're signed into all of google, gmail, youtube, etc.

edit: and as I was getting at earlier, you don't need to sign into fuckall for it to be listening to everything.
