All combat sports are very strict with blows to the back of the head and neck. You only have to see what happens when there's an accidental strike to this area to know how lethal things could be (e.g. that TUF 5 fight with Lauzon and Miller).

So what are we talking about ? Can you kill someone easily with a blow to back of neck ? Paralysis ? or just disorientation ?

Would you strike to this area in a street fight ?

The Occipital Lobe

This lobe sits at the back of the brain and receives the images transmitted to it from the optic tracts. A blow to the occipital lobe (back of the head) may result in an inability to make sense of what you see (visual agnosia) in your environment or read in a book or newspaper. The worst result would be "cortical blindness", an inability to see anything secondary to impaired interpretation of what is seen. This condition may be permanent or transient.

Rabbit Punch. A rabbit punch is a punch to the back of the head at the base of the skull, or to the neck at the base of the skull. It is dangerous since it may damage the cervical vertebrae and subsequently the spinal cord, which may lead to serious paralysis or death. The punch's name is derived from the name of the technique used by hunters to kill rabbits with a quick, sharp strike to the back of the head.

Lightly punch your self in the back of the head, very lightly. For maybe half a second, my vision gets slightly blurred, so imagine if some one did it to you a few times real hard.

At the very least diorientation, at it s worse, paralysis and even death.

As far as using it on the streets, that would just depend on escalation of force.

you can damage the brain stem
it can kill you
remember we are talking about above average athletes with above average power hitting people with conditioned elbows and hands
its really dangerous

Fedor got knocked in the back of the head a couple of times getting off the floor and still won his fights.

Whatch Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie, Renzo was a mess after that blow.

there is a reason where most if not all combat sports do not allow hits to the back of the head/center line... cus it's fucen dangerous.

honestly ive taken about 6 to the back of the head (in a row), before and can say it adds ALOT of dizzyness to the picture. i was able to clinch desperatly and go for the takedown (ala rampage one arm around the back and one between the legs and grip). without that takedown to buy me time, i wouldve been ktfo because it felt like i had been sucker-punched with such blurry vision.

Hmm, or maybe it was the 50 or so clean punches he ate on the chin.

He looked a lot worse after that shot to the back of the head. If you thought that was a bad example, see Cole Miller vs. Joe Lauzon on TUF.

And assume extremely hard, with no gloves, or getting slammed on concrete or a wall.

Easily fatal.
