I just read up on a lot of fighters backgrounds and a lot of them are right-handed southpaws, this makes me question which southpaw fighters are actual southpaws.

I know that Diego Sanchez, Joe Riggs and Jerome Le Banner(because of JKD) are right-handed southpaws but who else?

I've always had my doubts about Norifumi Yamamoto as a real southpaw. He favors his right quite a bit in fights and practice.

Does anyone have any info on Yamamoto or any other southpaw fighters?

at first i was a righthanded southpaw, as my technique was better than my orthadox stance, my trainer told me to stick with it since he is a left handed orthadox fighter. I believe Yamamoto is righthanded southpaw as he can shoot better from the other leg. im not exactly sure but thats what ive read. Krazy Horse is a righthanded southpaw if that matterd ahahah. but he also switches his stance so...

i started orthadox but im a true left handed south paw, learning tae kwon do, and some MMA young i was taught power foward, when i hit my teens i studied boxing a great deal and learned the orthodox south paw style. Good thing was that it made me a good fighter from both stances. tho i have trouble with lateral movement in an orthodox right hand stance, my brain still wants to keep moving right. lol

Confirmation: Yamamoto is indeed a right-handed southpaw. His base art is wrestling and he adopted the right-sided lead from his wrestling stance.

I'm pretty sure Gomi is one too for the same reason

Gomi indeed is right-handed, but he switches up his stance so much it's hard to categorize him as a true southpaw. Sort of like Marvin Hagler.

I agree but he fights southpaw for the majority of the time and switches to orthodox to coufuse his opponents so I think that he's a true southpaw

thanks a lot for the replies, the info answered a lot of the questions i had.

I've seen some of Rich Franklin's earlier fights and he fought orthadox before...now he's a southpaw...

as opposed to a left-handed southpaw?

I'm an orthadox regular right left handed southpaw.

Ishida as well. But he sucks as a striker and is only southpaw because of his wrestling.

Really, I'm a south legged orthodox paw, mainly because of my wrestling.

Sign me up..right handed southpaw since i started..always felt natural

I'm also a right-handed southpaw. Even as a straight up boxer it gives you a lot of advantages, especially if you have a good jab and prefer the hook and shovel hook as your power shots. Great choice for an aggressive in-fighter. The choice to lead strong side forward or backward really depends on your strengths.

In mma strong side forward can be even more useful, especially if you have a strong wrestling background. In both mma and boxing the advantage often comes from putting your coordinated side forward, which just so happens to be your strong side. This is why wrestlers lead with their strong sides.

I'm left handed but fight orthodox, I learned from to box from a right handed person so it's natural to me.
