How many of you use rubber guard?

I use it to keep people from passing my guard in judo tournaments to get stood back up , i like ground work but in tournaments you have little chance to get out of a pin if its sunk in .

but i have used it to get into a omoplata but iam a judoka so as soon as i get into the position iam usually just happy i got there haha .

guess thats why iam gonna take bjj soon to work on my ground game.

Ladder-up comes from the Basic Movement of begining in closed guard and walking your legs up your opponents back till they are behind his head[your knees up in his armpits] Eddie just pulls his leg up. This leaves Eddies hips still down near his opponents hips[thus knee injurys] Ladder up and your legs control your opponent's upper body and base, but your hips are in a stronger position higher up on his body, needing less flexibility.

Then do the attacks.

Pretty basic stuff that has been around for years at Gracie Barra in Brazil. Nino and Roleta are best known for it. Roleta has used invert the most, Nino the Rubber/Ladder up guy. As they say in Cali, "Its been around for Days! bro".

This is a page from my first book in 2002
Here is an example of backing out so you dont get stacked up like with all the rubber stuff. Try scootin back while in the rubber, it really breaks down their base further, and you dont need to be so flexible.

Wow, thanks for all the info. It seems like something fairly basic, and something everyone should know, but honestly I never think about getting the hips up high in rubber guard. You say you have a book or books? What are they called? And are they applicable to only the gi or both no gi and gi? Thanks for sharing the info!

Edit: I have the whole "foot behind the head" flexability so I've been able to use rubber guard while sitting low. That must be why I've never thought about it. Also for anyone who thinks you have to be born ultra flexible, I started out having trouble grabbing my toes. I too stretching seriously and within 3 months achieved some serious flexability. Don't give up if you can't do rubber guard at first. It can be done!

I'm new to the BJJ scene. Only been to a few classes so far. Should I read Bravo's books or should I get the basics down first?

THX

If you aren't familiar with rolling than I don't think a lot of what Eddie teaches will make a lot of sense. His books and videos are taught assuming you have a basic understanding of position and setups. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think you should learn a few basics first. Couldn't hurt to get the books and check them out though!

Rubber guard, at least at first, can be a very specific game. If your new to BJJ just expand off of the basics and get matt time in to establish a basic understanding of flow and positioning. You don't want to end up with jsut a bag of tricks. Check out some grappling vids of Roleta or Nino to see some inventive guard players with a gi and still heavy utilization of basics. Bravo's stuff is great but it's all no/gi hooks and the original gi can really help you break down the game to the simple axioms that it runs on.

i'm trying to learn it. iv'e got both his books and roll once a week with a guy really proficient in the system

i work my stretches whenever i'm waiting on the wifey to finish getting ready or just bullshitting watching tv. and review the techniques in the book after every roll or whenever i take a shit to help me trouble shoot or understand more of what's going on when we roll

so far i've been able to successfully apply the lockdown and half guard game. i can't actually use the guard yet because i'm just not that flexible right now but i'm getting there. i use the top game and twister set ups whenever i can though. it really helps rolling with someone proficient in the system.

read and stretch as much as possible!

i'm a big believer in the system. but it's not going to be my entire game. i'm trying to combine some catch and sambo where applicable. in fact theres a shit load of moves you can get to from the truck that sambo has to offer. explore everything, do what works!

Gi books, out of print and looking for a distributer

I only do when i'm grappling with someone who's a lot heavier and with not much skill. That way i can just hang on to dear life like a monkey while i rest or set something up.
Against smaller guys or guys who are more skilled than me... that's a big no, i'm not good with it.

I use it, in gi and no gi, if I feel frustrated with standard guard, I can switch to it, or If I am having a hard time keeping their posture broken, and alot of times they have no answer for the sudden change.

i just actually purchased all of eddies books recently and i find them to very different but very interesting i wanted to expand my game differently than most people in my area so i picked up his stuff. i use to use rubber guard alot and got quite proficient at it but i then based out from that with more of a wrestlers game than eddies jiu jitsu but i picked his stuff up and have not put his books down since i got them i think the twister is a very good thing to have in your arsenal i already cuaght 2 people in it tonight. also about the rubber guard i decided to use it against one of the guys i train with when we get ready for mma fights and i pulled rubber guard and he had no idea what to do he was just like what is this and he couldnt get out i almost had him but due to the lack of flexibility that is needed( im still pretty flexible just not enough yet for rubber guard) i had to let go my knee was about to explode but anyway it is fun to mess with but usefull if done right and practiced

Notice in Mission Control Eddie has his passive foot on his opponents hip?

Push with that foot and scoot your butt out once you have his base broken down. Give it a try, you wont need to be so flexible, it changes the angle and your sitting up more in an MMA situation where you have way more room to punch as well.

I haven't really tried it. I want to increase my flexibility before I do so. But I do plan on using it in the future.

I get it. I ain't laughing, but I get it.

Rubber guard is something I screw around with in practice, but I don't really have the confidence or skill to use it more often than that.

I don't use it at all. I take certain other things from his books though.

My instructor is wanting to me to get it down to add to my game since i'm one of the few guys at my gym that has the flexibility to gain some success with the rubber guard.

I have just recently started using the rubber guard but I mainly only think its good for those who are flexible, which i am.It helps me trap people in my guard and setup a couple of submissions from it, but it is awesome to just hold him and hit them in that position but i find it hard to use on the huge guys but isnt everything

I tried using it on Black Belt Leo Cantu the other day....didn't go so well for me. :(

I use it when I can...to be honest I have just recently learned that my top game is much better than my guard game...but when I get guard I try to work with it...I have a high % omoplata...but I am trying to work on finishing it now! I like to use it as a sweep though too
